Ghafla! can EXCLUSIVELY confirm that Radio personality and actor, Mr. Nick Ndeda has this week sealed a contract with Nairobi-based Rock radio station 105.5 XFM.
Nick used to host a show on Homeboyz Radio, before he moved to Hot 96 FM where he did an evening show right before he left to concentrate on his acting career. He will feature prominently in the upcoming MTV production, Shuga: Love, Sex and Money that is set to hit television screens tonight (MTV Base and KBC at 10.30pm).
Nick will host a 3pm to 7pm show titled the Homerun-drive on weekdays. This also follows a cameo appearance on the popular South African drama series, Jacobs Cross. We had a chance to sit down with Nick recently and catch up on what he has been upto. Here's the interview:
GHAFLA: What motivated you to go into radio and/or acting
NICK: Acting has always been a passion of mine since I was 10. So I ALWAYS knew I’d be an actor when I grew up. Radio, I sort of stumbled upon it and realized that I was really good at it coz I really like radio. Growing up I listened to more radio than anything else since I had a lonely childhood (no friends and all).
GHAFLA: Whats your role in Shuga: Love, Sex and Money? Most challenging and greatest aspects of your time there?
NICK: I play Angelo-a rehabilitated gangster with musical aspirations whose recurring past elements plague his present and force him to make firm decisions if he is ever to realize his dream, crime free life. Most challenging: Losing the character after we were done shooting coz I got so into the psyche of someone who was struggling with sexual desire, self esteem issues, poverty and still manage to crack a smile every now and then! Greatest aspect was writing and recording the raps! Music really is the key that lets the soul free. After doing that, I no longer doubt my abilities in this industry.
GHAFLA: Why did you leave Hot 96? (May be personal but can you share your thoughts?)
NICK: I always believe that we have a purpose and that we are al here to do what we are all here to do. My time at Hot 96 had just run out, and even if I had stayed there, there would have been very little progression on my end so I chose to keep moving forward.
GHAFLA: If you weren’t in radio or on TV what else would you be doing?
NICK: I’d probably be a caped crusader with a cool suit like Batman. Because I like to help people, not coz I like to play dress up!
GHAFLA: Can you talk to us about your role on Jacob’s Cross, what were your feelings?
NICK: It was all so sudden. One night I get a phone call from my agent about an audition he’s booked me for, next day I’m auditioning and the moment I got to the ground floor I get a call from the producer saying I got the part, and the next week I am on a plane to South Africa! It was all surreal at first but I managed to get my feet on the ground and shooting was pretty amazing. Working with seasoned actors such as Hlomla Dnadala & Jet Novuka, was truly inspiring as well as Oscar nominated director Angus Gibson! My role, while not so major, has put me on a platform whereby I can learn from some of the best in the continent as well as expand my fan base so all in all, quite thankful to God and Bomb Shelter for the opportunity.
GHAFLA: What will your role be on XFM?
NICK: I am going to be hosting the Homerun-drive show from 3-7pm on weekdays! Its very exciting for I have listened to XFM since its inception and to finally work there with industry greats like Fareed Khimani in an organization as professional as Radio Africa only goes to show me that I did not “stumble” into radio, it was only part of my purpose.
GHAFLA: What are your future ambitions?
NICK: More acting, more radio, more TV, more writing, more love, more music, more faith.
GHAFLA: Anything else you would like to share?
NICK: Be patient and pat yourself on the back anytime you don’t feel like you’re part of the crowd. Truth is, you’re not meant to, coz you’re NOT part of the crowd. You’re unique, so do you!
