In an announcement last week on their Shuga Blog, MTV announced that they received such overhwhelming response from fans across the globe over the first #ShugaSex chapter surrounding the story of the character Baby and Violet, including the issue of gender based violence, that they would be producing a novel around the same theme and characters.
On the MTV blog they wrote:
'One particular issue that we, and everybody else have strong opinions about was that of gender based violence – in particular in the heartbreaking story of Baby in Episodes 1 and 2 in which her Uncle Njau abused his position of authority and took advantage of her sexually.
One article in particular that created a lot of discussion was 10 Ways To Protect Yourself From Sexual Violence, in which we discussed Baby’s rape, and talked about steps to take to reduce the risk of ending up in such a situation in the first place.
Have a look at an excerpt of the graphic novel by MTV Shuga below:
As a follow up to that, we will be releasing a graphic novel that will be focusing on and extending Baby’s story.'
This is the FIRST time ever that a local television production in Kenya has followed up its screening with a supplementary graphic display. It will be interesting to see the response to this as usually a 'comic' comes first, followed by an on-screen adaptation, much like the Supa Strikas.
