10 Reasons Why Beer Is Good For You

There are several reasons why beer is good for you. Courtesy of Tusker #TeamKenya, we give you the best ones.

1) Beer makes you live longer

Virginia Tech researchers found that regular, moderate beer drinkers were 19% less likely to die during a given time period as compared to people who never touch a drop.

2) Beer helps to fight cancer

An ingredient in beer can even help your body to fight cancer.Xanthohumol – a flavonoid found in some alcoholic drinks – is an antioxidant which inhibits cancer-causing enzymes.

3) Beer keeps your brain sharp

A study in the New England Journal of Medicinefound that women who had one alcoholic drink a day were less likely to find their mental faculties declining as they grow older.

4) Beer doesn’t actually give you a beer belly

A study at UCL found there wasn’t actually much scientific evidence behind the idea of beer giving drinkers the distinctive ‘beer belly’. The researchers wrote, “There is a common notion that beer drinkers are, on average, more ‘obese’ than either non-drinkers or drinkers of wine or spirits.” The association between beer and obesity, if it exists, is probably weak.

5) Beer has less calories than skimmed milk or orange juice

Never mind the fact that it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll drink 10 pints of skimmed milk, beer is low cal.Guinness released statistics showing that its heavy, dark brew is lower in calories than either OJ or skimmed milk.

6) Beer can protect against Alzheimer’s…

Although it won’t protect you against not being able to remember what happened last night.A recent study found Xanthohumol, a compound in the hops used to flavour beer, is able to protect the brain from degenerative disorders, such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons.

7) Beer is full of vitamins

Who needs disgusting smoothies?‘If you analyzed beer, you would be amazed at how many super-nutrients there are in it, says Dr. Stephan Domenig, Medical Director of the Mayr Health Centre in Austria.

8) Beer makes your bones stronger

A glass or two a day could help make your bones stronger; it’s rich in dietary silicon which is key to building bone mineral density, according to a study in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

9) Decreased incidence of heart disease

There are more than 20 well-done, international studies that all demonstrate that the heart benefits from moderate alcohol consumption. One study, conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) noted a 20 to 40 percent decrease in coronary artery disease in moderate alcohol drinkers. Now, that doesn’t mean drinking more is better.

Drinking beer responsibly is drinking healthy. Moderate consumption of beer (alcohol) results in an increase in HDL (good cholesterol) and a decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol), along with an improvement in both HDL and LDL particle size.

So, don’t worry about the medical terms; just know that a slightly “buzzed” heart is a happy heart.

10) Beer boosts your ability to socialize

In a social setting, beer can help loosen you up as you unwind with friends after a hard day’s work. So go on, have a Tusker today.
