6 Types Of Music Fans In Kenya

Kenya has a rainbow of music listeners. They range from the sane to the more uhm… Shall we say idiosyncratic? There are the annoying type that want to listen to a song 45times asthough they are sitting a test on the lyrics or they are performing a C.I.A brain-washing experiment.Kenya has a rainbow of music listeners. There are the annoying type that want to listen to a song 45times asthough they are sitting a test on the lyrics or they are performing a C.I.A brain-washing experiment.

But jokes aside, what i have realised is that Kenya is divided into music listeners who have their distinct tastes and opinions on music. And it got me thinking, “Why don’t i try to demystify the types of music listeners?” Hope you have as much fun reading this one as i did doing it. Then feel free to let me know what you think thereafter.

#1. The Troll

This is someone who always has something negative to say about virtually every song they hear. The few times when they give a compliment, it’s so back-handed that you can nearly hear the slap in it. They are the type to hear Sauti Sol’s new jam “Range Rover” and have something negative to say. They are the type to hear A Just a Band track and have something nasty to say.

#2. The Snob

This type of person rubbishes any track just because it’s local. Unfortunately, we all know a person like this… They act asthough they just stepped off the plane yesterday and everything foreign is gold while what we have here is trash.

This type of person is prone to making comments such as “This song is bad, have you heard David Guetta’s new track? It’s so much better!” or “I don’t listen to locals, they are too watu!”

#3. The Groupie

You know the type, always looking out for their favourite artist’s new material and are always at their concerts. They are usually of the fairer sex but are far from being ladies. These lasses are usually aspiring celebrities and they figure the best way to go about this by knowing the artists whose songs are enjoying the heaviest rotation and leeching off their fame.

#4. The Critic

These are the people who listen to a song from a holistic approach. They listen out for the lyrics, harmony and melody, the instrumentals and sometimes even the video. They have their different reasons for doing so, some are professional critics, some are music students, some just like music. But whatever reasons these critics have, what they say is usually not too far from the money. We all know atleast one critic. They are often intelligent but can drive you crazy with their analysis of the track.

#5. The fan

This is the type of individual who loves everything done by their favourite artist. To them it isn’t so much about the music or it’s quality but the brand behind the song. If say, one is a Nameless fan, they love everything Nameless does and to point out weak areas is akin to blasphemy.

#6. The Normal people

These thankfully are the bulk of music fans. These are the guys who don’t care to get into the nitty gritties nor the personalities behind the track. They just want good music. The rest you can tell to the birds!
