8 Popular Clubs Shutdown by NEMA

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has ordered the immediate shutdown of eight major entertainment venues across the country over persistent noise pollution violations.

The closures — affecting popular nightclubs and lounges in Nairobi, Kiambu County and the Coast region — took effect without delay, marking one of the regulator’s strongest enforcement actions this year.

Affected Establishments

According to NEMA, the following venues were targeted in the crackdown:

  • Kettle House, Muthangari Drive, Nairobi

  • Boba Drinks and Café, Kilimani, Nairobi

  • Bar Next Door, Othaya Road, Kilimani, Nairobi

  • Emirates Lounge, Pipeline, Nairobi

  • Kifaru Place, Mombasa Road, Nairobi

  • Infusion Lounge, Ruaka, Kiambu

  • Status Lounge, Ruaka, Kiambu

  • Speedy’s Bar and Restaurant, Watamu Beach Road, Kilifi

The Authority said all eight businesses had repeatedly breached environmental standards and ignored earlier Environmental Restoration Orders (EROs).

“The Authority has continued to receive noise complaints from these facilities even after being warned through previous orders,” NEMA stated in a notice shared on its social media platforms.

Months of Warnings Culminate in Closure

The crackdown follows sustained pressure from NEMA, which in September 2025 issued a nationwide compliance directive placing 107 establishments on notice for noise pollution.

Those facilities were ordered to submit compliance reports detailing noise-control measures and reasons why enforcement action should not be taken. The directive came amid rising public frustration, with NEMA reporting a 38 percent increase in noise-related complaints over the past two years.

The enforcement is anchored in the Environmental Management and Coordination (Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution) (Control) Regulations of 2009.

Terms for Reopening

For the affected venues to resume operations, NEMA has outlined strict requirements:

  • Immediate closure of premises

  • Completion of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

  • Acquisition of a valid environmental licence

  • Installation of adequate soundproofing systems

  • A noise survey demonstrating compliance with legal noise limits

Only after meeting these conditions will the establishments be allowed to reopen.
