Kenya MET Announces Regions To Expect Heavy Rainfall Across Kenya

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has advised residents across multiple regions to prepare for increased rainfall between Tuesday, October 14, and Saturday, October 18. Major towns, including Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Naivasha, Kiambu, Kericho, and Lodwar, are among those expected to experience rain and showers.

Areas on Alert

The Met Department forecasts rain and showers for the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya.

Regional Breakdown

• Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi): Counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi will start the period with sunny intervals on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. However, showers are expected in various parts for the rest of the week, with chances of afternoon showers on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Nighttime will be partly cloudy on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by expected showers on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Temperatures in this region are forecast to range between a maximum of 30∘C and a minimum of 06∘C.
• Western, Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria Basin (Thunderstorms Expected): A prolonged period of rain and showers, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, is predicted for Kisumu, Kisii, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot counties throughout most of the week, day and night. The maximum temperature here is expected to be around 32∘C, with minimums of 08∘C.
• Coastal Region: Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal parts of Tana River County are likely to experience sunny days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. However, cloudy conditions are expected to be prevalent throughout the week, with a chance of isolated showers on Friday and Saturday. Maximum temperatures are predicted to reach 32∘C, while minimums will hover around 23∘C.
• South-Eastern Lowlands: Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland Tana River County are expected to see sunny conditions during the day and cloudy nights for the entire week. Temperatures will peak at about 33∘C and drop to a minimum of 12∘C.
• North-Western Kenya: Turkana and Samburu counties will experience sunny days and cloudy nights. This region is expected to be the hottest, with maximum temperatures soaring to 37∘C and minimums at 08∘C.
• North-Eastern Kenya: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties are forecast to have sunny conditions until Thursday. Isolated patches of rain may occur on Friday and Saturday night, though the daytime will remain generally sunny.

Motorists and residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas like Nairobi, are advised to exercise caution due to the anticipated wet and cold weather conditions.
