Young Star Aces It In Her First Track

Dora is a teenage newcomer who might just be the next big thing in Kenyan music. The first time she ever tried to make music, she aced it in her brilliant rap-singing record which is undoubtably impressive especially considering she also did the production.

In an interview with Ghafla!, she explained how she got interested in music and confirms Oyela (Rise) as her first song. Check out the transcript for that bit below.

Ghafla!: “17 is a pretty young age to do all the things you do, singing, rapping and production. What moved you to start doing music?”

Dora: “I started music when I was pretty young. I started playing the clarinet when I was about 10, started violin a bit later. Now I can play all the instruments–okay, a majority. I was attracted to it as a profession end of last year, beginning of this year. That’s when I started doing voice because before then it was just instruments. I broadened my horizons.”

G!: “Is it really broadening? I mean, do you actually play instruments for your music?”

D: “Well, not yet. But on the upcoming EP I will be playing violin and clarinet in some of the songs.”

G!: “Arnold is your producer but you also produce for yourself. When does he do the production and when do you do it?”

D: “When I’m sleepy, he produces–no, I’m joking, Just whenever. If he has a good song, I jump on the track. If I have something, I do it as well. We just go with the flow basically.”

G!: “How did you start doing everything for yourself? Did it come from frustration after trying to find people who would do it and could find any?”

D: “No. This comes from the point where I play instruments. It’s easy to use logic and use instruments to create something on the computer so now it’s just natural. Because many producers around are just messing around the first time, that’s how I did Oyela.”

G!: “Oh, Oyela was messing around?”

D: “[Laughs] I mean, I was just trying. It was the first track I produced so I was just trying to see. And then it came out great and I was like, oh sh*t!…I mean, oh…”

G!: “No, that’s fine.”

D: “Let me do it again.”

G!: “No, really. It’s fine.”

D: “So, I was like, oh, let me try it again. Arnold produced The Anthem with Khaligraph, which is the third song from my EP. I previously released Oyela and then I did Dare tO dReAam, Intro.”

G!: “So, Oyela was really the first time you ever tried to do anything?”

D: “Yeah.”

Dora is just about to release her EP. Date to be announced soon. In the meantime, check out her brilliant first venture into recorded music on Oyela (Rise) below.
