What Really Holds Back Women in Entertainment?

When we look at the ‘female side’ of the urban Kenyan entertainment scene, a quick glance at the list of top female celebrities shows you that they are, first of all, very few in number.

Apart from Nazizi, Wahu and Amani, you will be hard pressed to name any other female A-List celebs off the top of your head. These are not women who came into the game just a few months back. These girls have been in the industry since the very beginning, working their a**es off to build fanbases internationally.

Nazizi in an interview with the Daily Nation once talked about how hard it is for a woman to do music, saying, “When I started rapping, many people dismissed me as a non-starter.”

When you look at an artist like Wahu, her discography is very ‘small’. She has less than ten songs to her name in total, and even less videos, yet she is considered a dominant force in Kenyan music, and an unmistakable presence when she walks into a room.

Could it be that a lack of competition has allowed her to have things as they are?
