The 2012 Kenya Drama Festivals Wrap Up

The best of the National Schools and Colleges Drama festivals was paraded at Kakamega High School as the 2012 edition came to a spectacular end yesterday.

There were a variety of plays that captured the attention of the audience and other competitors including Kennedy Buhere’s Kenya Institute of Mass Communication County Edition 411 play which was basically about the role of counties in the future of the country.
The recent discovery of oil in Turkana was also featured as a dramatized act as another, Bamba 50, was a creative depiction of the 2008 post-election violence in fascinating imagery and reflective dialogue.
Chogoria Girls from Eastern made history at the festival when their film, A Time to Cry, was the first ever to be screened at the national Gala event.

Plagiarism however reared its ugly head at the drama festivals with two schools, Mukumu Girls from Western and Chogoria Boys from Eastern, presenting scripts and plays that were identical.
The plays, ‘Heaven’ by Cleophas Malalah and ‘The Antidote’ by Allan Chahasi were clearly similar if not the same, as the Festival chairman noted that both were the same ‘word for word’.
Nevertheless, the festival ended on a successful note with the Minister for Education, Hon. Mutula Kilonzo, gracing the galas.
