After Mavuno Church Unleashed The Provocative (‘Porn’) Poster Another Organization Unveils Something Even More Provocative. Will This Cause People To Take To The Streets?

Sex and relationships have a big impact on young people’s lives, but many live in regions where information about sexual health and rights are censored and taboo judging from the uproar and backlash Mavuno’s ‘Blurred Lines’ campaign received.

Undettered by this, Love Matters now offers reality check offering sexual health information with a positive take on pleasure and relationship satisfaction.

And as parents and campaigners take to the streets calling for the pope to protect their children from comprehensive sex education, the organization has launched the Love Matters Music Awards where  young Kenyans are singing openly about love and sex.

The Love Matters Music Awards are the first music awards in Kenya dedicated to providing young people the chance to produce songs on themes related to pleasure and sexuality.

For example, there is even a song about that “fantastic moment when you are about to cum”. Saucy stuff, without being explicit. Breaking taboos and encouraging open and honest conversation around the things which affect all of us.

The Love Matters Music Awards were inspired by the Love Matters Africa audience questions and comments. Through focus groups and online interaction, it was clear that the most important themes people have to talk about are:

o       Being responsible- Both boys and girls talk about responsibility. Responsibility can be a duty, a burden, and a desirable characteristic. How does pleasure relate to sexual responsibility?

o       Expectations of sex and relationships- Boys and girls have quite different expectations of sex and relationships but they are not talking openly with each other about these expectations. There is a lot of suspicion about each-others motives and many young people question whether their thoughts and desires are “normal”.

And it is the audience who will decide who wins.

Over the last few days the participants have been laying these tracks down and they are now live on the Love Matters YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7oAUB0FOVG-nov-8Dax6fH9JNF-UclhP)

All of the musicians are members of the Sauti Academy, which is run by the record label Penya Africa. They have been working with international creative team, alongside Love Matters, to compose and record songs about love, sex and relationships.

Whoever wins “The People’s Choice” will get an audio recording of the winning song, as well as a professional music video recording. The winner will be announced at the live final on December 5th at the Creatives Garage in Nairobi.
