The first month of dating is an exciting one. And in that excitement, it\u2019s easy to jump ahead and make some big dating mistakes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Here are nine things to avoid doing in the first month of dating:<\/p>\n

1. Make plans for the distant future.<\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s a rule you can steal from \u201cHow I Met Your Mother\u201d: \u201cNever make plans with a date further in the future than the amount of time you\u2019ve been going out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, in a non-sitcom land, this rule gets voided once you\u2019re in a serious, committed relationship \u2014 otherwise, no one could ever make marriage vows \u2014 but in the first month of dating, keep plans for the future at a minimum. This should be a no-pressure time to get to know one another.<\/p>\n

2. Use the \u201cL\u201d word.<\/h2>\n

You might be falling for Mr. Right, but don’t drop the “love” bomb just yet. Keep your date from getting overwhelmed \u2014 and guard your own heart \u2014 by taking things slow. There\u2019s plenty of time for love talk. In the meantime, just keep things at \u201clike\u201d and reassure your date that you\u2019re interested in moving forward.<\/p>\n

3. Talk about your future wedding. (See #1)<\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t get ahead of yourself. You\u2019ll have plenty of time to plan a wedding\u2026if the relationship makes it past\u00a0the one-month mark. Also, no one wants to hear that you\u2019ve been planning a wedding on your own. It can come across as too eager \u2014 or worse,\u00a0desperate.<\/p>\n

4. Introduce your date to your entire family.<\/h2>\n

Meeting up with some friends or a sibling for a drink is one thing, inviting your date to your aunt\u2019s birthday party is another. Set aside month #1 as getting-to-know-you time. You don\u2019t want your grandma coming to conclusions about the where the relationship is headed before you do.<\/p>\n

Related: Don\u2019t meet the kids either. Give it time. Only introduce your kids to someone you\u2019re serious about.<\/p>\n

5. Co-purchase something together.<\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t buy a dog together, an antique table together, or a couples\u2019 membership to the zoo. Don\u2019t even buy a lottery ticket together.<\/p>\n

Unless you\u2019re just splitting the cost of dinner, keep purchases separate. Otherwise, you\u2019re prematurely adding a level of commitment to the relationship.<\/p>\n

6. Slam your ex.<\/h2>\n

Your date wants to get to know YOU, not that jerk who dumped you. In a long-term relationship, all the dating horror stories of the past will be revealed. Don\u2019t overwhelm your date with unnecessary (and bitter) details in the early stages of a relationship.<\/p>\n

7. Ask for money.<\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t do it. Your first month of dating might turn into your last.<\/p>\n

8. Give him a key.<\/h2>\n

Draw some careful boundaries for your burgeoning relationship. Don\u2019t merge lives too soon.<\/p>\n

Related: Don\u2019t ask him to reschedule his life for you. You\u2019ve been dating less than a month. Don\u2019t expect him to cancel poker night for your friend\u2019s wine and cheese night. It\u2019s okay to have separate lives, especially this early on.<\/p>\n

9. Show up at her work.<\/h2>\n

Let her brag to all of her coworkers about you for months before you make an appearance. Her work is her space. Respect it. (And when you do eventually show up at work, bring flowers.)<\/p>\n
