Have You Noticed The Influx of ‘Phone Call’ Songs Of Late?
So Marya has just released her latest song, ‘Sishiki Simu,’ and after I managed to take my eyes off of the video(tough task, believe me), it got me thinking, haven’t we had quite a number of songs talking about phone interactions of late?
Let’s start with Juliani’s “Hello.” Does it seem to be a bit odd to you that a gospel artist would suddenly release a song called Hello, talking about a busy signal na mbona tunamlenga and such, out of the blue, with not much mention of Jesus in the song?
And then after “Hello” there was “My Call” by MOG and Juliani talking mostly about picking calls that were not going through? Even though they tried to put a bit of worship into that song, the telco influence was strong in it.
Now we have “Sishiki Simu” by Marya, where she also puts a huge emphasis on the whole phone call aspect of the song.
My hunch is that, either artists are craftily angling for endorsement deals with local telco companies, which are known for splashing cash on advertising. Either that, or they are already contracted by the telco companies to do some sort of new-fangled viral marketing campaign without being too forceful about the marketing message!
Do you think there is a pattern to be observed here, or am I just being paranoid?
