Hot New Rapper Talks About Leaving Her Former Group
Dora impressed with her debut single, Oyela (Rise). As she prepared for her new record, an EP title Dare tO dReAm, we spoke to her about her music. And in the midst of it all, she talked about her former group, It’s The Aliens. Check out the transcipt below.
Ghafla!: “You used to be in a group, the Aliens.”
Dora: “ITA, It’s The Aliens. That’s what it was called. And yeah, we were a group back in the day.”
G!: “You’re 17, when is back in the day? When you were an embryo?”
D: “Yeah, you know. Everyday is a million years in my book, I do too much. I’m joking. Well, back in–last year, we were moving on to other things. Some of us wanted to be solo, so that’s what happened. We’re not together, we’re not working together, we’re not associating. None of that.”
G!: “I was going to ask you next. Sanjei (from ITA) discovered you?”
D: “I guess. I wouldn’t say he discovered me ’cause I wasn’t lost. I was just there. It’s just that he’s the first person I actually worked with.”
G!: “How did he ‘discover’ you? Where did he see you performing since Oyela wasn’t out.”
D: “We’ve been family friends for a really long time and I wen to school with his sister. And he has a studio in his house–well, he used to–so that’s how I used to be there a lot and we’d be in the studio messing around. And then last year is when I finally went to Arnold’s studio and that’s where I was able to develop it more on a serious basis.”
G!: “So, what happened to the Aliens?”
D: “Different things. First of all, Sanjei moved to America.”
G!: “Atlanta. He told me that he went there to do something with Outkast’s Big Boi.”
Arnold: “Yeah, I think he’s there in University in Boston.”
G!: “Oh, he told me ended up at Stankonia Records, Big Boi’s studio.”
D: “Oh, I just know he went a studio somewhere and met someone.”
Dora is just about to release her EP. Date to be announced soon.
