Jay Z snubs Kenya, expands music empire in Kampala, Uganda

TIDAL, music streaming site founded by Jay-Z, recently launched in Africa and Uganda and Nigeria were selected by the American rapper as the countries of choice to rolled out the streaming service to the continent.

TIDAL launched in Uganda through a partnership with MTN – the country’s largest mobile network. From Uganda and Nigeria, the streaming platform will roll out to the rest of the continent especially where MTN operates.

Unfortunately MTN does not operate in Kenya, so does Kenya stand to lose?

Apparently Jay Z snubbed Kenya because of the percentage of youthful population. According to Tidal bosses quoted by Billboard, Uganda and Nigeria were chosen because they have a higher percentage of youthful population.

Approximately 78% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 30 years, while the figure in Nigeria is 83%, this made the two countries an ideal target market for Tidal services.
