2Mbili discusses helplessly watching Shalkido die

Gengetone musician Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui, popularly known as Shalkido, passed away on October 7, 2025, after several days of battling for his life following a devastating road accident.

Just hours before his death, doctors at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) confirmed the heartbreaking news that Shalkido had been declared brain dead.

A Painful Farewell in the ICU

Content creator 2Mbili, a longtime friend who knew Shalkido from his early comedy days, was among those who visited him in the ICU. Speaking afterward, 2Mbili recounted the emotional final moments he spent at the hospital.

He arrived at KUTRRH around 2 a.m., where he met members of Shalkido’s family and waited for nearly an hour before being allowed into the intensive care unit.

“I went to the ICU and looked at Shalkido. There was a lot of blood coming out of his ears. He was connected to so many pipes — maybe around 100. I just prayed to God to help him, but deep down I knew it would be very hard for him to survive,” 2Mbili shared.

Doctors had already prepared the family for the worst, explaining that Shalkido’s brain and kidneys had completely failed, and that he had lost all five senses, including the ability to feel or smell.

The medical team discussed options with the family, noting that continuing life support would be costly and unlikely to change the outcome. 2Mbili left the hospital around 5:30 a.m., only to receive news less than an hour later that Shalkido had passed away.

Understanding the Diagnosis

The confirmation of brain death marked the point of no return. Medically and legally, brain death signifies total and irreversible loss of all brain and brainstem function, meaning the person cannot breathe or sustain vital processes without machines.

According to earlier updates shared by comedian Oga Obinna, Shalkido had suffered extensive internal bleeding and brain swelling. The injuries were described as inoperable, making any surgical intervention impossible.

The Road Accident

The tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 5, 2025, along Thika Road, between Githurai and Carwash, as Shalkido rode a motorcycle toward Nairobi after performing at a club in Thika.

2Mbili recalled that they had recently discussed road safety and that he had specifically reminded Shalkido always to wear a helmet — a conversation that now feels painfully haunting.

Shalkido’s death has reignited public concern about Kenya’s rising road carnage. As of August 10, 2025, the country had recorded 2,933 road traffic fatalities since the beginning of the year, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

A Call for Unity

In his tribute, 2Mbili urged fans and fellow artists to come together in support of Shalkido’s family, calling on the Sailors Gang fraternity and the wider entertainment community to unite during this difficult time.

“Let’s stand with his family, pray for them, and keep his memory alive,” he said.
