Maraga Joins 2027 Presidential Race, Vows To Fight Corruption & Impunity
In a significant move, former Chief Justice David Maraga has declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 General Election. This announcement marks his shift from a distinguished judicial career into active politics.
Speaking to NTV on Wednesday, Maraga confirmed he would be on the ballot, aiming to provide a fresh approach to leadership and directly confront what he identifies as rampant impunity, corruption, and ethnic divisions in Kenyan politics.
Having served as Kenya’s Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021, Maraga emphasized that his decision stems from a profound desire to re-establish integrity, accountability, and ethical governance in a country he views as facing critical challenges.
“After serious reflection, I thought it was time we thought about the leadership of this country. We can’t let some people literally drag our country through the doors. As a result of that reflection, I have made up my mind that I will run in 2027 for the presidency of this country,” he stated. He added that his decision to enter politics was deeply personal, prompted by recent events that have shocked the conscience of many Kenyans.
One key motivator, Maraga explained, was the continued application of excessive force against peaceful, unarmed civilians, especially young people advocating for justice.
“This has come as a result of what has happened in the country. I am a parent, and so many others are parents. To see our young people being handled the way they have been handled is extremely worrying,” Maraga commented, referring to recent incidents of police brutality during youth protests.
The former Chief Justice also dismissed the current political model, which he believes heavily relies on ethnic loyalties and financial inducements to sway voters. He called on Kenyans to shift their focus towards leadership defined by integrity, competence, and accountability.
“My view is that I want to appeal to Kenyans that this politics of ethnicity, where you look at me as where I come from and how many voters are behind me, is what has brought us to where we are,” he asserted.
