Key access roads to Nairobi’s central business district were sealed off early in the morning, forcing commuters to alight at designated drop-off points.
In addition, all roads leading to State House were barricaded with razor wire, and the Parliament buildings were heavily fortified.
Despite the heightened security, protesters gathered in Nairobi’s central business district near the Kenya National Archives, chanting the names of young Kenyans killed by police during last year’s demonstrations against the Finance Bill.
Businesses in the CBD have also remained closed as they want to avoid goons breaking into their various shops.
Some businesses re-enforced their premises using metals yesterday in preparation for the demonstration.
Last week, goons broke into various shops and stole electronics and anything valuable that they could find.
Apart from this, President William Ruto yesterday encouraged the police not to be intimidated but to do their job in maintaining law and order.
Kenyans aim to witness a peaceful demonstration today as they gather in the streets of Nairobi.
