Senator Karen Nyamu Condemns June 25 Protests
Senator Karen Nyamu has strongly condemned the June 25 protests, labeling them as “aimless” and marred by excessive violence. She expressed profound disappointment, stating that she had anticipated a peaceful and respectful commemoration of those who lost their lives during last year’s June 25, 2024, demonstrations.
Writing on her Facebook page, Senator Nyamu described her shock at the chaotic scenes that unfolded. She had expected a solemn memorial but instead witnessed “violence, fear, and people causing trouble.”
“I didn’t like yesterday’s protest. I thought it was a memorial to remember those who were killed last year. But it turned out to be violence, threats, and mob tension. Why? Did you like it? Just one question, yesterday young people, what did you want to achieve? Last year the course was very loud and clear. This time, you can tell it was the first time protesters were without a course,” she wrote, questioning the motivation behind the recent demonstrations.
The Senator asserted that, unlike the 2024 protests, the recent demonstrations lacked a clear reason or objective. She queried whether the youth were genuinely protesting for their own causes or if they were being manipulated by individuals with hidden agendas. Nyamu specifically warned young people against being misled by leaders whom she suggested have nothing to lose and are merely seeking attention.

Nyamu also voiced deep sorrow over the extensive destruction of businesses during the protests. She expressed particular distress that many of these businesses were owned by “hardworking Kikuyu people,” who were striving to earn an honest living and are now suffering from damaged shops and property. She challenged leaders who claim to represent the Kikuyu community for their silence on the destruction.
“Was it your strategy, or did you follow whose script? A lot of businesses were hurt, mainly run by my industrious Kikuyu people. Where is the self-appointed spokesperson for the Kikuyu people to condemn it?” she demanded.
Senator Nyamu concluded her post by urging young people to exercise caution regarding whom they follow and what causes they champion, emphasizing that not all leaders operate with good intentions.
