Popular Comedian KK Mwenyewe Dies After Short Illness
Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, widely known by his stage name KK Mwenyewe, who rose to prominence for his popular impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has passed away. He died on Monday night at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital after a short illness.
The news of his sudden demise was shared by fellow comedian and collaborator Kafengo. “We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki, AKA Mr Kk Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing medical attention at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital,” Kafengo wrote in an emotional Facebook post.
“During these sad moments, we ask for support and prayers. To the family and friends, may God give us strength at this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”
Kariuki’s humorous and often deadpan depictions of the former Deputy President had garnered him a massive following, with 1.1 million followers on TikTok and an additional 412,000 on Facebook. His final skit on both platforms was posted on July 4. Beyond political mimicry, KK Mwenyewe’s relatable sketches also included imitations of teachers and ordinary Kenyans, resonating deeply with a wide audience and frequently amassing hundreds of thousands of views, particularly on TikTok.
The news of his death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow comedians, fans, and even politicians. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah was among those who mourned him, hailing KK Mwenyewe as a comedian who skillfully used satire “to hold a mirror to society, not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite.”
“Kenya has lost not just a comedian, but a cultural commentator and a brave young patriot. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire creative community,” Omtatah stated. “May his soul rest in peace, and may his light continue to inspire courage and creativity in those he leaves behind. Fare thee well, Mr KK Mwenyewe.”
As of the time of publication, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whose impersonations were central to Kariuki’s popularity, has yet to comment on the comedian’s passing. The exact nature of the “short illness” that led to his death has also not been publicly disclosed, although images of him in hospital have been widely shared on social media
