Trump Escalates Attacks On Obama As He Alleges 2016 “Coup”

Former U.S. President Barack Obama could be facing the unprecedented prospect of treason charges, should President Donald Trump’s administration decide to pursue accusations related to what Trump has claimed was a “coup attempt” during the 2016 election.

President Trump ignited fresh political controversy after directly accusing his predecessor of orchestrating efforts to overturn his election victory. He explicitly linked this accusation to renewed investigations into the late Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case. The explosive statement was delivered during a meeting with Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House, and followed an announcement by Trump’s Department of Justice that Epstein’s long-time associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, would be re-questioned in prison.

Obama’s Allies

During his remarks, Trump initially dismissed the Epstein case itself as a “witch hunt” before abruptly shifting his focus and directing his anger toward Obama. “The witch hunt that you should be talking about is, they caught President Obama, absolutely cold,” he asserted. He further alleged, without presenting any evidence, that Obama had tried to “steal” the 2016 election—a claim that was swiftly rejected by Obama’s spokesperson as “outrageous.”

These serious allegations emerge amidst renewed public interest in Epstein’s connections to powerful figures. Jeffrey Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Although his passing was officially ruled a suicide, conspiracy theories—particularly those propagated by the far right—have persistently claimed a “deep-state” cover-up aimed at protecting his influential clients, according to reports from France24.

Trump has seemingly attempted to balance the political fallout from the Epstein saga. While his administration concluded in early July that Epstein’s passing was not suspicious and that no definitive client list existed, many within his political base remain unconvinced. Some fervent supporters view Trump as the sole figure willing to uncover the full extent of Epstein’s alleged crimes. To appease these loyalists, Trump previously ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the release of sealed grand jury testimony from Epstein’s past cases. However, that effort reportedly yielded little new information and did not satisfy conspiracy theorists demanding names and concrete proof of elite involvement.

The issue reignited recently after The Wall Street Journal reported on a bizarre 2003 birthday card allegedly sent by Trump to Epstein. The card purportedly featured a drawing of a naked woman with Trump’s signature forming her pubic hair and a cryptic reference to a “wonderful secret.” Trump has vehemently denied sending the note and has filed a lawsuit against the publication.

While Trump himself has never been charged in relation to Epstein, he was photographed with him at parties and was once considered a close acquaintance. As calls for transparency regarding Epstein’s network continue to mount, Trump appears eager to redirect public attention toward his perceived political enemies—especially Barack Obama.

Legal experts caution that Trump’s claims about Obama carry no immediate legal consequence unless substantiated by solid evidence. However, politically, this strategy could prove potent in galvanizing his base ahead of the 2026 midterms, where loyalty and outrage remain powerful tools for mobilizing support.

Barack Obama’s spokesman, Patrick Rodenbush, issued a rare and strong rebuke of President Trump’s statements, calling Trump’s pledge to use the Justice Department to target his predecessor “ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”

“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response,” Obama’s spokesman said. “But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one.”
