“Political Persecution”- Governor Wamatangi Breaks Silence After Midnight Demolition Of Nyayo Stadium Businesses

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has spoken out following the dramatic demolition of his business premises near Nyayo National Stadium, alleging that the move was a politically motivated attempt to sabotage his 2027 re-election bid. The dawn operation, which took place on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, saw a heavy contingent of police oversee the flattening of several establishments along Douglas Wakiihuri Road, including a car yard, a car wash, and a popular restaurant.

Visiting the site where bulldozers had reduced his multi-million shilling investments to rubble, Wamatangi described the incident as a targeted act of “cowardice.” He maintained that he is the rightful tenant of the land, holding a 65-year lease from Kenya Railways for which he has consistently paid rent since establishing his presence there in 1994.

Allegations of Political Intimidation

The Governor did not mince words, claiming the destruction was orchestrated by political rivals seeking to distract him from his duties in Kiambu. “

I began here as a small boy selling tea and mandazis and rose to establish the business that was here,” he stated. “What has happened is purely political and intended to silence and intimidate me. If you want to be the Governor of Kiambu, you should come to the people and not through intimidation.”

Despite the heavy police presence, which eyewitnesses claim included the firing of live rounds and teargas to disperse onlookers. Wamatangi vowed to remain steadfast in his political ambitions. He further revealed that he had feared for his life during the night, noting that reports of gunfire prevented him from visiting the scene in the early hours of the morning.

Conflict Over Legal Notice

A central point of contention remains the legality of the eviction. While authorities indicated the move was necessary to pave the way for a new infrastructure project—a train station linking the CBD to the upcoming Talanta Stadium—Wamatangi insisted that no formal notice was ever issued.

“I can tell you for sure that there was never even one single day of notice. If there was a notice, let them produce it,” he challenged.

The demolition occurred just as Wamatangi, through his company Superclean Shine Enterprises, had moved to court to seek an injunction against what he described as “verbal threats” from Kenya Railways. While the Governor expressed deep disappointment over the loss of livelihoods for dozens of his employees, he stated he would not seek revenge, instead opting to follow legal channels and leave the rest “in the hands of God.”

The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from the Kiambu Clergy Pastors Forum, who visited the scene to stand in solidarity with the Governor, terming the operation “inhumane” and a setback to the local economy.
