Government Releases Emergency Funds as 3.3 Million Face Severe Drought

KAREN, NAIROBI – In a high-level response to a deepening food security crisis, the Kenyan government has announced an emergency scale-up of aid for 3.3 million citizens currently facing starvation.

The decision follows an intensive review of the nation’s food and nutrition security. Data indicates that the drought has reached a critical stage after the October–December 2025 short rains significantly underperformed, leaving vast stretches of the country parched and unproductive.

Government Response Strategy

To mitigate the escalating disaster, DP Kindiki met with Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries today in Karen to finalize a multi-sectoral intervention plan.

The government has committed to releasing additional funds to procure essential food items and streamlining “last mile” delivery modalities to ensure aid reaches the most remote and vulnerable communities.
The objective is to cushion the people of Kenya and their livelihoods from the devastating effects of this drought through a coordinated, rapid response.

The government’s primary focus now shifts to the efficiency of the distribution network, ensuring that the released resources translate into immediate relief for the 3.3 million people currently in need.
