“Am I From Mars?”- Fred Matiang’i Rules Out 2027 Alliance With President Ruto

Jubilee Deputy Party Leader and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has categorically dismissed any possibility of forming a political alliance with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on his recent integration into the United Opposition, Matiang’i characterized a potential partnership with the Head of State as “counter-productive,” citing a pattern of fractured relationships between the President and his former allies.

Dismissing the Outreach

When questioned on whether he would entertain an invitation to work with the UDA party leader, Matiang’i was blunt, questioning the logic of joining a government that he claims is already experiencing internal friction.

“What would we be discussing? Work with him on what? Look at his history, the people he has wanted to work with,” Matiang’i remarked. “He is already quarrelling with the ones he has been working with. Surely, am I from Mars? What difference is it going to make?”

Critique of the Fuel Crisis

The Jubilee chief also took aim at the Kenya Kwanza administration’s handling of the energy sector, specifically the recent controversies surrounding fuel prices. He accused the government of allowing “vested elite interests” to drive policy, leading to a manufactured crisis.

“If I were Head of State, I would not engage and allow cartels to operate in the whole sector… I don’t understand why we got into these agreements with private companies,” he stated, suggesting that the current agreements favor private entities over the ordinary citizen.

2027 Presidential Ambitions

Despite a crowded opposition field that includes big hitters like Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and former DP Rigathi Gachagua, Matiang’i remains unwavering in his bid for the top seat. He insisted that his ambition is backed by “scientific work” and a high level of confidence in a victory.

“I have not thought about not being President. I would not invest in something if I am not like 70-80% sure about it,” he asserted. “I can’t see President Ruto’s pathway to election victory.”

Independence from the “Project” Label

Addressing his deep ties to the previous administration, Matiang’i refuted claims that he is a “project” of 4th President Uhuru Kenyatta. While he remains loyal to the Jubilee Party, he emphasized that his candidacy is independent and based on his own professional record rather than being an extension of his former boss’s influence.

With no love lost between the two leaders, Matiang’i’s recent comments signal a hardening of the battle lines as the United Opposition begins to consolidate its strategy for the next electoral cycle.
