Author Sue Nyathi Warns Kenyan Readers Against Buying Pirated Copies of ‘The Polygamist’
Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi has raised concerns over the sale of pirated copies of her bestselling novel ‘The Polygamist’ in Nairobi, urging readers to avoid purchasing unauthorised versions of the book.
In a post shared on her social media platforms on Monday, June 22, 2026, Nyathi addressed reports of copyright infringement involving her work, warning fans to support only official copies.
The issue comes at a time when ‘The Polygamist’ has gained renewed popularity following its adaptation into a successful Netflix South African series.
Nyathi Appeals to Kenyan Fans
Nyathi directed her message specifically to Kenyan readers who discovered the story through the Netflix adaptation and are now looking for copies of the original novel.
She revealed that she had been informed about a bookstore in Nairobi allegedly selling pirated editions of the book and encouraged readers not to support such sales.
“This post is specifically for my Kenyan followers who loved The Polygamist series on Netflix and now want to binge read the book. It has come to my attention that there is a bookstore in Nairobi selling pirated copies. It might not be the only bookstore but please do not buy pirated copies,” she wrote.

The author said she is working to ensure the book becomes officially available across East Africa through authorised distributors.
“I am working day and night to make sure the book becomes available in the East African region. Copyright infringement is a crime and a violation of my rights,” she added.
Nyathi also reminded readers that while demand for the book is growing, supporting counterfeit copies harms creators and undermines intellectual property rights.
“There are pirated copies of The Polygamist being sold in Nairobi. I know the book is in demand and I am working to make it available there through a reputable supplier. Copyright infringement is a crime. Do not support the violation,” she said.
Rising Interest After Netflix Adaptation
The renewed attention around The Polygamist follows its transformation into a Netflix series that has attracted audiences across multiple countries.
The story follows Jonasi, a wealthy businessman whose life begins to unravel due to infidelity, personal choices and the consequences of his lifestyle.
Since its release on June 12, the series has gained popularity in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, France, Jamaica, Italy and Hungary, while also performing strongly on Netflix’s global charts.
The success of the adaptation has sparked fresh interest in Nyathi’s original novel, increasing demand for physical copies and prompting the author to push for wider official distribution channels.
