Bobi Wine explains why he’s left Uganda
Bobi Wine, born Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, has confirmed that he has left Uganda after reportedly spending several months in hiding over security concerns.
The 44-year-old politician had remained largely out of the public eye since mid-January 2026 following a disputed election loss and a reported military raid on his residence. During that period, he frequently used social media to express fears for his safety and to communicate with supporters.
In a video released on the morning of March 14, 2026, Bobi Wine confirmed that he had departed the country, explaining that he needed to travel abroad to attend what he described as “critical engagements.”
“By the time you see this video, I will have left the country for some critical engagements outside Uganda, and at the right time, I will come back and continue with the cause,” he said.
The opposition figure also thanked Ugandans who assisted him during the period he said he was in hiding.
“Those who fed me, clothed me, and those who offered me shelter, God bless you,” he added, acknowledging individuals who helped keep him safe.
Although he did not reveal his destination, Bobi Wine announced that Lina Zedriga Waru will serve as the acting president of the National Unity Platform during his absence.
His departure marks another significant moment in Uganda’s political landscape, as the opposition leader balances personal security concerns with the challenges of leading his party in an increasingly tense political environment.
