“Don’t Wait Until You’re Ready”- Tom Daktari Details His Gritty Rise From School Beatings To Comedy Stardom

In a candid sit-down on the Alex Mwakideu podcast at AM TV, popular comedian Tom Daktari—born Andrew Wambua Mboya—delivered a powerful masterclass on resilience. Summarizing his life’s philosophy with the slogan

“Usingoje uwe tayari” (Don’t wait until you’re ready), the actor revealed a journey defined by survival, chaotic hustles, and the courage to start messy.

A Childhood of Survival

Tom’s early years were far from the glamour of the spotlight. He recalled a turbulent school life where discipline was extreme; at one point, he claims to have received 78 strokes of the cane from a relay team of teachers. Academic success didn’t come easy either, as he was forced to repeat Class 7.

However, a dramatic shift occurred when he moved from ranking 37th in his class to the top three, a turning point where he says “life began to make sense.” This newfound focus followed him into high school, where he began his entrepreneurial journey selling avocados to buy his very first mobile phone.

Shattered Dreams and the CBD Trap

Interestingly, the man now known for making thousands laugh once envisioned a much holier path: the priesthood. Tom explained that those dreams were ultimately shattered upon moving to the city.

“Usikuje CBD,” he joked, warning that the Central Business District is where everything in Kenya happens and where self-control becomes a “full-time job.”

This transition eventually led him to the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC), supported by a brother who believed in his potential long before the public did.

The Hustle: From Egg Buckets to Scriptwriting

Even while pursuing his studies, Tom’s grind never stopped. He narrated his days of selling eggs out of a bucket, hilariously admitting that his “Kachumbari” sometimes consisted only of tomatoes because onions were “optional” in his budget.

His break into the media industry came through acting auditions, fueled by his deep talent in oral literature and Fasihi Simulizi. This eventually landed him at the Nation Media Group, where he worked as a scriptwriter for The Wicked Edition alongside Dr. King’ori and Nick Kwach.

Action Over Perfection

Today, Tom Daktari is more than just a comedian; he is a successful businessman running multiple ventures, including a water company. He credits his success to the fact that he stopped looking for a “secret formula” and instead embraced his own path.

“If I follow the Alex way, I might not make it, but if I try my own way that works for me, then it might work,” he noted. His story remains a testament to the idea that clarity doesn’t come from overthinking—it comes from taking action, even when you feel completely unprepared.
