Final Goodbye : A Look at Britam’s Heshima Farewell Plan

In Kenya, funerals are more than events.

They’re cultural, communal, and often urgent. When loss happens, everything moves fast – decisions, logistics, expectations.

And, in many cases, families are forced to figure out the financial side in real time.

That’s where the Heshima Farewell Plan by Britam comes in.

Developed through a partnership between Britam Connect and Montezuma Funeral Home – the plan is designed to ease the financial pressure that comes with funeral arrangements.

What’s in The Plan?

Heshima Farewell Plan is a last-expense insurance cover that steps in when death occurs – whether natural or accidental.

It caters to the immediate needs that typically arise, including:

  • Mortuary fees (based on selected package)
  • Hearse transport across the country
  • Casket or coffin provision
  • Funeral flowers and wreaths
  • Portraits and printed materials (in select packages)
  • Cash support for clothing expenses

The focus is practical: covering the essentials that allow families to organize a dignified send-off without financial strain.

Who Benefits from Heshima Farewell Plan?

The plan is structured around the realities of the Kenyan household.

It allows cover for:

a) The principal member and spouse (18 – 70 years).

b) Children (from 1 month up to 18 years, or up to 25 if in school).

c) Parents and in-laws (up to 80 years at entry).

d) Extended family under group arrangements.

This makes it suitable for families with broader responsibilities beyond the nuclear setup.

What Options are Available on the Plan?

Heshima offers four tiers, based on level of support:

  1. Basic – Ksh100,000
  2. Standard – Ksh150,000
  3. Executive – Ksh300,000
  4. Platinum – Ksh500,000

Each tier determines the extent of services and support provided – click here for details.

Affordability is Key

The plan is positioned to be very accessible, with an affordable structure.

For a nuclear family, premiums start from Ksh1,000 per year for the basic cover.

Extended family packages are available at higher tiers, depending on the number of dependents and level of cover selected.

This allows families to spread out costs that would otherwise arise suddenly.

How is the Claim Process?

To initiate a claim, the following documents are required:

  • National ID or birth certificate of the deceased
  • Burial permit or death certificate
  • National ID of the beneficiary
  • Police abstract (in case of accidental death)

Once submitted, the process moves toward payout and service support.

What are The Waiting Periods

The policy includes standard waiting periods:

  • Natural death – 1 month
  • Accidental death – no waiting period
  • Parents/in-laws – 3 months
  • Pre-existing conditions – 6 months

These timelines guide eligibility and expectations after making a claim.

Leave a Legacy

Planning ahead doesn’t remove the weight of loss – but it can reduce the pressure that comes with it.

The Heshima Farewell Plan offers a structured way to prepare, ensuring that when the time comes, families focus on farewell – not the cost.
