“I’m not straight…” – Pierra Makena
Actress, DJ, and media personality Pierra Makena recently shared her deeply personal and inspiring journey during a candid interview on Dr. Ofweneke’s show on TV47. From a young girl in Meru to becoming one of Kenya’s pioneering female DJs, Pierra’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and breaking barriers in the male-dominated entertainment industry.
From School Drama to TV Stardom
Pierra’s career took off when she was just 17 years old. After impressing at school drama festivals, she was scouted by Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and cast in the iconic show Tausi.
“KBC scouted me because of my acting. That’s where it all started,” she recalled.
Dr. Ofweneke, who first met Pierra during his time at Aga Khan High School, praised her early accomplishments and courage in entering spaces few women dared to explore at the time.
Facing Criticism as a Female DJ
Breaking into the DJ scene was far from easy. Pierra revealed that her toughest critics were often fellow DJs, many of whom didn’t take kindly to her presence.
“Fellow DJs were my biggest critics. Someone even paid a Twitter troll to attack me,” she said, exposing the entrenched sexism she had to endure.
Her challenges extended beyond the turntables. Pierra revealed she lost a brand endorsement solely because she is a single mother.
“They said their image couldn’t be tied to ‘single moms,’” she lamented.
Adding to the public scrutiny, rumors swirled around the identity of her child’s father, with many speculating it was DJ Moh. Pierra firmly dismissed the claim:
“We’re just good friends. Period.”
Launching The Mom’s Club — A New Chapter
Despite the obstacles, Pierra remains focused on uplifting others. She announced her upcoming platform, The Mom’s Club, which launches on May 30.
“It will be a safe space where moms can share both struggles and victories,” she said.
She cheekily added that the show might finally put to rest public curiosity about her love life:
“If you’re curious about my baby’s dad or my love life, that’s where you’ll hear it.”
Ending on a Light Note
The interview ended with a dose of humor. When Dr. Ofweneke asked about her sexuality, Pierra playfully responded:
“I’m not straight—I’m quite curvy!”
The room erupted in laughter, showcasing the charisma and confidence that has defined her two-decade career.
Pierra Makena’s story is not just about personal success—it’s a testament to the power of perseverance, self-belief, and lifting others as you rise.
