Liverpool And Portugal Forward Diogo Jota Dies In Car Crash With His Brother

Reports circulating about the death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, in a car crash are being widely reported by several news agencies as of Thursday, July 3, 2025.

According to initial reports from the Civil Guard to the Associated Press and confirmed by the Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Portuguese FA, Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, 25, died in a car accident near Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident, stating that no other vehicles were involved.

The news comes just weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.

Diogo Jota had made 182 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolves in 2020. He was part of the squad that lifted the Premier League title in May, and had previously won the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups during his five years at the club. His career also included spells at Portuguese side Paços de Ferreira, Atlético Madrid, and FC Porto.

The Portuguese international, Jota earned 49 caps for his country, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again last month, scoring 14 goals.

His brother, André Silva, was also a professional footballer, playing with lower-division Portuguese club Penafiel.
