Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota Dies in Tragic Car Crash in Spain at 28
Liverpool and Portugal international Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car accident in northern Spain at the age of 28—just two weeks after marrying his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso.
Jota, a father of three, was reportedly traveling with his 26-year-old brother Andre, who is also a footballer and is feared to have also perished in the crash.
The accident occurred on the A-52 highway in the Zamora province, a key route frequently used by drivers leaving northern Portugal. According to emergency services in Castilla y León, the vehicle was engulfed in flames following the incident.
A statement released by the regional emergency operations center read:
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received multiple calls reporting a serious accident at Km 65 of the A-52 in Cernadilla, Zamora. The vehicle was on fire.”
“Emergency teams including the Zamora Traffic Police, Provincial Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center were immediately notified and dispatched to the scene.”
Just one day before the crash, Jota had spoken in a heartfelt interview, describing himself as “the luckiest man in the world” after marrying Rute, his partner of many years and the mother of their children.
News of his death has shocked the football world, with tributes pouring in from fans, players, and clubs across the globe. Jota was widely respected for his skill, professionalism, and dedication both on and off the pitch.
The Portuguese Football Federation and Liverpool FC are yet to issue official statements, but grief has already gripped supporters, many of whom recall Jota’s key contributions to both club and country.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
