NTSA Summons Sacco Officials Following Deadly “Nganya” Stunt Crash

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued an urgent summons to the management officials of Risen Sacco and Royal Swift Express Limited following two separate road traffic accidents that resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries.

The primary enforcement action follows a horrific, fatal crash involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operated by Risen Sacco along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, which claimed at least four lives and left 15 passengers hospitalized.

Lethal Stunts Cut Short in Industrial Area

According to eyewitness accounts from the scene, the Risen Sacco vehicle—a highly customized matatu popularly known as a Nganya—was allegedly performing dangerous driving stunts on the busy industrial corridor when the driver lost control.

The vehicle overturned violently, trapping passengers inside the crumpled wreckage before emergency responders and factory workers rushed to pull victims from the vehicle.

The fatalities from the Enterprise Road tragedy include three passengers and a 30-year-old female pedestrian who was struck as the vehicle flipped. Police confirmed that 15 other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and are currently undergoing treatment at various medical facilities across the city.

“The Authority is saddened by the fatal road traffic crash involving a Public Service Vehicle operated by Risen Sacco along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area,” the safety regulator said in an official statement.

Secondary Crash Prompts Wider Probe

In addition to the Industrial Area tragedy, the transport regulator confirmed it is actively probing a separate, non-fatal highway accident along the Nairobi-Namanga road involving a passenger vehicle operated by Royal Swift Express Limited.

While no fatalities were reported in the Namanga highway incident, the safety compliance history of the sacco is being scrutinized alongside Risen Sacco to determine if mechanical failure or driver negligence contributed to the scare.

Safety Compliance Crackdown Looming

The double incidents have forced the safety authority to reinforce its oversight on public transport discipline, particularly targeting the trending subculture of reckless driving and dangerous stunts among urban Nganya crews.

“We remain committed to thorough investigations, and we will take appropriate action,” the NTSA warned, adding that operators found culpable of violating traffic laws risk losing their road service licenses.

The transport regulator has issued a stern directive to all PSV operators, drivers, and conductors across the country to exercise maximum caution, strictly respect speed limits, and adhere to passenger safety regulations as formal investigations into both saccos get underway.
