Press Freedom Under Threat As Journalists Attacked During Saba Saba Protests

Grave concerns are mounting over the safety of journalists in Kenya after reports confirmed that at least three journalists were physically attacked while covering the Saba Saba Day demonstrations in Nyeri on Monday, July 7. This alarming incident underscores a disturbing trend regarding press freedom and the security of media professionals during periods of civil unrest.

The attacks occurred amidst widespread protests across various counties, where police and demonstrators clashed, leading to at least 10 fatalities and numerous injuries. Journalists, fulfilling their crucial role of informing the public, found themselves caught in the volatile environment.

Renowned Kenyan CNN journalist explained that he was missing in action this time for he had been threatened by a politician who gave out money to hire people to disrupt his work.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) had previously condemned attacks on a press conference at the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) office on July 6, where journalists were reportedly harassed and robbed by masked individuals. This pre-Saba Saba incident, along with the latest attacks in Nyeri, paints a grim picture for media practitioners in the country.

Organizations like the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have consistently raised alarms about violence against journalists in Kenya, calling on authorities to ensure their safety and allow them to work freely. These attacks, whether by state agents or other elements, contribute to self-censorship and deny the public their right to know.

The targeted assaults on journalists during the Saba Saba protests highlight a critical need for greater protection and accountability. Media advocacy groups are expected to demand thorough investigations into these incidents and call for measures to safeguard press freedom, which is a cornerstone of a democratic society.
