Ruto Set To Launch Free Emergency Ambulance Evacuations
In a historic move for the country’s healthcare system, Kenya is set to launch its first-ever National Ambulance Dispatch Centre by the end of July 2026. President William Ruto announced the major emergency medical response overhaul on Sunday, June 21, during the 95th St. John Ambulance annual parade and inspection.
The state-of-the-art facility will centralize and streamline emergency medical responses, drastically reducing response times and ensuring swift access to life-saving services nationwide.
With this launch, Kenya marks a continental milestone, becoming only the second country in Africa to establish a nationally coordinated ambulance system.
“I am pleased to announce that Kenya will launch its first National Ambulance Dispatch Centre, becoming the second African country to establish a nationally coordinated ambulance system,” President Ruto stated.
Tech-Driven, Real-Time Coordination
The upcoming center will be fully embedded within the country’s modern digital health framework to maximize efficiency.
-
The Backbone: Powered by the Digital Health Agency (DHA).
-
The Tech: Driven by real-time tracking and coordination systems.
-
The Impact: Enables faster ambulance deployment, optimized route mapping, and seamless communication between emergency responders on the ground and receiving hospitals.
“The centre… will be integrated into our digital health infrastructure and powered by the Digital Health Agency, enabling faster coordination, real-time deployment and more efficient emergency response across the country,” the President added.
Free Emergency Services for All Kenyans
In a major win for public health equity, President Ruto revealed that emergency ambulance evacuation services under this new system will be provided completely free of charge to all Kenyans. This crucial directive aims to eliminate crippling financial barriers that often delay care during critical, life-or-death moments.
Once fully operational, the centralized national network is projected to coordinate approximately 100,000 emergency evacuations every year.
The landmark reform aligns directly with the government’s broader agenda to fully digitize public services and leverage technology to secure robust Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all citizens.
