Renowned gospel singer Rachel Wandeto has passed away at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after succumbing to severe burn injuries sustained during a horrific attack in Mwiki.
Wandeto passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026, just days after unknown assailants doused her in petrol and set her ablaze. News of her demise was confirmed by her industry colleague, Karangu Muraya, who had previously made an urgent appeal for blood donations to save her life.
“A great soul has rested… May your soul rest in peace, Rachel Wandeto,” Muraya shared in a tribute.
Suspected Political Motive
The brutal assault has sparked widespread public outrage across the country. Preliminary reports and public speculation suggest the attack may have been politically motivated.
The incident reportedly occurred just days after Wandeto publicly declared her support for President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid, a stance she amplified by getting a tattoo drawn in his honor.
Government and Security Response
The gravity of the attack drew the attention of top government officials. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited the singer at KNH on Sunday, May 17, less than 24 hours before she succumbed to her injuries.
Condemning the heinous act, CS Murkomen warned that violence targeted at individuals for their political beliefs poses a severe threat to national stability.
“If it is true, as there have been speculations around the possibility of a political motive by basically attacking her for her political beliefs, this is really very dangerous for our country,” Murkomen stated.
The Interior CS further cautioned political leaders against weaponizing the youth and inciting ethnic divisions, adding that the state would ruthlessly pursue both the perpetrators and the planners of the attack.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that a multi-agency probe is underway. He directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to fast-track the investigation, establish the definitive motive behind the arson, and ensure all culprits face the full force of the law.
