Government Set To Build Memorial Where Shakahola Massacre Happened

Posted on March 28, 2024 by Dennis Elnino
Government Set To Build Memorial Where Shakahola Massacre Happened

The Kenyan government has announced a two-pronged approach to address the horrific Shakahola massacre

Memorial Construction

A memorial will be built on Chakama Ranch, the site of the tragedy, to serve as a permanent reminder of the victims and the atrocities committed.

“The Government will acquire parts of the Chakama Ranch where the main suspect carried out his atrocious crimes on the people of Kenya and build a memorial to remind us of what happened in perpetuity.”

Official Accountability

Public officials who failed to prevent the massacre, in any way, will be held accountable. This process will begin once a court injunction is lifted, allowing a presidential commission of inquiry to proceed.

“Once the Courts lift the prevailing injunction, the accountability of public officials who contributed to the occurrence of Shakahola atrocities in whatever manner will ensue through the Commission of Inquiry appointed by the President,” Kindiki added.

He also put on notice land fraudsters and criminal gangs encroaching on public land, especially in the coastal region.

“Land fraud, illegal encroachment on private and public land, criminal gangs, the sale and consumption of illicit alcohol, narcotic drugs, and psychotropic substances and poor transition of children into secondary school are the key security and enforcement priorities in Kilifi County,” Kindiki added.

The government has begun releasing bodies of the victims for burial.Officials are conducting a final check at the Shakahola Forest to ensure proper closure of the exhumation sites.

Mackenzie and thirty others will have psychiatric examinations in the high court

Mackenzie and thirty others will have psychiatric examinations in the high court

Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and thirty other individuals have been directed by the Malindi High Court to undergo a mental assessment within 14 days before the commencement of their murder trial.

Mackenzie and his co-accused have been in custody, accused of orchestrating the Shakahola massacre. The suspects have been held in Shimo Latewa, Kilifi, and Malindi prisons during the ongoing investigations.

The pastor and his fellow accused are facing five charges and ten counts related to murder, torture, assault, slaughter, and terrorism.

High Court Judge Thade Mugure has mandated that the suspects undergo a 14-day psychiatric evaluation. The court has also ruled that a bail hearing will be postponed until the accused can enter a plea.

The suspects will appear before the Mombasa, Shanzu, and Tononoka courts for separate hearings, scheduled to commence on February 6th of this year.

This decision comes in the wake of a court warning that it might release the preacher, emphasizing the need to bring the prolonged legal process to a conclusion.

The head of the Good News International Ministries religious doctrine and his co-accused were apprehended in connection with the deaths of over four hundred people associated with the religious doctrine.

Mackenzie, however, is serving a one-year sentence for operating a television station and engaging in filming activities without proper licensing.

The massacre came to light in the early weeks of April when a man reported to the police that his wife and daughter, who had joined the ministry in Kilifi County, did not return. Subsequent investigations uncovered shallow graves and emaciated individuals.

As a result of these revelations, an inquiry was initiated, and the pastor was identified as the mastermind, with congregation members stating that he ordered them to starve themselves for ‘redemption.’ Investigations have been ongoing since then.

Psychiatrists Call For Government Support For Shakahola Survivors

Posted on June 19, 2023 by Dennis Elnino
Psychiatrists Call For Government Support For Shakahola Survivors

Psychiatrists have called on the government to provide mental health support to the survivors of the Shakahola tragedy.

The tragedy occurred in May 2023, when 65 people were found dead in a camp in Shakahola, Kenya. The victims were followers of cult leader Paul Mackenzie, who had promised them a better life. However, they were instead subjected to abuse and neglect.

The survivors of the tragedy are now facing a number of challenges, including physical and psychological trauma. Psychiatrists say that they need specialized care to help them recover.

“The survivors of the Shakahola tragedy have been through a lot,” said Boniface Chitayi, president of the Kenya Psychiatric Association. “They need our help to get back on their feet.”

The government has not yet responded to the psychiatrists’ call for help. However, Chitayi is hopeful that they will do so soon.

“We need to act now,” he said. “The survivors of the Shakahola tragedy are suffering, and they need our help.”

In addition to providing mental health support, the government should also help the survivors to reintegrate into society. This could include providing them with housing, education, and job training.

The Shakahola tragedy is a reminder of the importance of mental health. It is also a reminder of the need for government intervention to protect vulnerable people from abuse.

The government should take the lead in providing support to the survivors of the Shakahola tragedy. They should also work to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.

Government knew about Shakahola cult victim burials

Government knew about Shakahola cult victim burials

A burial permit issued to one Evans Sirya on January 28, 2022 has revealed how Mackenzie was allowed to conduct burials for his murderous cult.

The burial permit, with serial number 1722406, bears the signature of the then Makongeni Sub Location Assistant Chief, Raymond Charo.

It seemed that you could get the burial permit after submitting a small letter explaining why you needed the permit and attaching a copy of your ID card.

In this case, Sylas Omondi Otieno had written a letter requesting a burial permit to bury his wife, Zilpha Adoyo Mwande.

Both Mr Otieno’s and Mrs Mwande’s national identity card numbers were listed in the letter and a copy of his card was attached.

On the same day, a burial permit was issued, stating: “Having duly ascertained the cause of death of the above deceased person, I hereby authorise the burial of the body,” and signed by Makongeni Sub-Location Assistant Chief Raymond on January 28, 2022.

However, Nation was able to trace the family of the deceased and Mrs Mwande’s mother was dead and had been buried over 15 months ago.

In an exclusive interview, Mrs Esther Anyango mentioned that she had no idea that her daughter had died or had even moved to Shakahola with her husband.

She had to travel from Kisumu to find out the truth.

After a thorough search of the house, she found the burial permit.

She is now seeking justice and does not know when she will see her son-in-law and grandchildren again.

Mackenzie lawyers run away from him and his case

Posted on June 14, 2023June 14, 2023 by Ozymandias
Mackenzie lawyers run away from him and his case

Two lawyers representing cult leader Paul Mackenzie and 28 other suspects have requested to recuse themselves from the case, citing frustrations in trying to access the suspects and concerns about the fairness of the trial.

Lawyers George Kariuki and Elisha Komora said they have been unable to meet with their clients for several weeks, and that they have been threatened and harassed by unknown individuals. They also expressed concern that the suspects are being held in inhumane conditions, and that they may not receive a fair trial.

“With the challenges that the suspects are going through and the current circumstances, I feel my conscience is disturbed,” Kariuki said. “I am afraid that justice may not be served if I continue to represent them.”

The third lawyer representing the suspects, Wycliffe Makasembo, said he will continue to represent them. He said he believes that the suspects are being unfairly targeted by the government, and that he is committed to ensuring that they receive a fair trial.

“I feel there is an invisible hand trying to frustrate Mackenzie and others,” Makasembo said. “This hand is none other than the state. Personally, I will stick with Mackenzie and the others to death or when I will feel I have had enough and also run away.”

The case against Mackenzie and the other suspects is still in its early stages. It is unclear whether the court will grant the lawyers’ request to recuse themselves.

65 Victims Of Shakahola Forest Suicide Attempt Arraigned In Court

65 Victims Of Shakahola Forest Suicide Attempt Arraigned In Court

Sixty-five people who were rescued from the Shakahola Forest after attempting suicide have been arraigned in court. The victims are said to have allegedly attempted suicide by refusing to eat while at the Sajahanadi Rescue Centre in Mtwapa.

The prosecution has made an application to have the victims remanded in prison, as the Rescue Centre can no longer hold them. The prosecution has argued that the victims are a danger to themselves and others, and that they need to be placed in a secure environment where they can receive the necessary medical and psychological care.

The defense has argued that the victims should not be remanded in prison, as they are not a danger to themselves or others. The defense has also argued that the victims should be allowed to remain at the Rescue Centre, where they have been receiving treatment.

The judge has reserved his ruling on the prosecution’s application.

The Shakahola Forest suicide attempt is a tragic event, and it is important to understand why these people took such drastic measures. There are many factors that can contribute to suicide, including mental illness, substance abuse, and financial problems. It is also important to remember that suicide is never the answer. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please reach out for help. There are many resources available, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255).

Exhumation of Bodies in Shakahola Forest Resumes

The exhumation of bodies believed to be of the followers of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie resumed on Monday after a two-day break.

The exhumation is being conducted by a team of detectives from the Homicide unit, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), pathologists, and government chemists. The team is working to ensure that all of the bodies that were buried in the forest are exhumed.

So far, the team has exhumed 274 bodies from the 840-acre Shakahola land. The exhumation process is expected to continue for several more weeks.

The exhumation is part of an investigation into the deaths of over 600 people who are believed to have been followers of Mackenzie. The preacher is accused of convincing his followers to commit suicide by drinking poison.

The exhumation is a difficult and emotional process for the families of the victims. However, it is important to ensure that all of the bodies are exhumed and that the families are able to lay their loved ones to rest.

The investigation into the deaths of the Mackenzie followers is ongoing. The police are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward.

Shakahola’s Death Toll Rises to 242 As Search Continues

A woman’s body was found on Monday in a thicket of Shakahola forest during a police search and rescue operation. The body was found as police were continuing to excavate the forest for bodies of people who died in a religious cult.

The death toll from the cult has now risen to 242. Another victim was also rescued on Monday, bringing the total number of survivors to 93.

Detectives have also conducted an examination of 79 dead bodies within three days out of the 129 that were scheduled to take place.

Last week alone, five bones of people believed to be followers who died and their bodies were decomposed were found in the forest.

The autopsy is still ongoing and is expected to be completed on Wednesday this week so that the team can begin the third phase of the exhumation.

On Monday, detectives and pathologists who conduct the postmortem examination managed to carry out an examination of 34 bodies removed from Shakahola.

The police search and rescue operation is ongoing, and it is possible that more bodies will be found. The cause of death for many of the victims is still unknown, and the police are still investigating the circumstances of the cult’s activities.

The discovery of the woman’s body is a reminder of the tragic events that took place in Shakahola forest. The police are working to bring those responsible to justice, and the families of the victims are grieving their loss.

Armed bandits working for Mackenzie oversaw starvation at Shakahola-Kindiki

Armed bandits working for Mackenzie oversaw starvation at Shakahola-Kindiki

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has disclosed that followers of Pastor Paul Mackenzie who altered their opinions once they began to hunger were slain.

Kindiki claimed that Mackenzie had employed armed thugs to keep an eye on the starved followers.

The supervisors would either strike them with a blunt object or strangle them to death if they changed their minds, he claimed.

The CS informed senators that while the majority of victims perished from malnutrition, a sizeable portion also did so through blunt object injuries or a lack of oxygen.

On Friday, Kindiki testified before the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on the Proliferation of Religious Organizations.

Since the horrifying cultic events were discovered on April 14, around 241 remains have been retrieved from shallow graves in the woodland.

On the first 112 bodies, autopsies revealed that the majority of the victims had died from malnutrition.

Kindiki added that his officers have located further mass graves.

“Satellite photos have revealed more mass graves exist. Ten mass graves are certain to exist, he said.

He expressed certainty that all bodies would be found and that those who were still alive would be saved. When everything is finished, Kenyans will be informed, he claimed.

“We will tell Kenyans the magnitude, the numbers, and all they need to know,” he continued.

Foreigners Among Victims of Shakahola Massacre

Foreigners Among Victims of Shakahola Massacre

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has said that some of the victims of the “Shakahola massacre” were foreigners from neighboring countries.

Appearing before the Ad hoc Committee on the Proliferation of Religious Organizations on Friday, the CS said preliminary investigations show that some of the victims traveled from neighboring countries to join Pastor Paul Mackenzie’s church.

Kindiki was quick to point out that locals avoided Mackenzie’s church after learning of his wayward ways.

“At the beginning, most of his followers were locals but after learning of his antics, many of them left,” he said.

The CS said the majority of the victims were from western, Northern Kenya, Eastern, Nyanza and some parts of Coast.

Some 241 bodies have so far been exhumed from shallow graves in the forest since the horrific cultic occurrences came to light on April 14.

Autopsies on the first 112 bodies showed that most of the victims died of starvation.

Some victims, including children, were strangled, beaten, or suffocated, the head of forensic operations, Johansen Oduor, said two weeks ago.

Police have so far arrested 39 people and rescued 91 others from the forest.

The Shakahola massacre is one of the most horrific crimes in Kenya’s recent history. It is a reminder of the dangers of religious extremism and the importance of vigilance against cults and other forms of harmful religious practices.

Shakahola Commission suspended

Posted on May 23, 2023 by Ozymandias
Shakahola Commission suspended

The High Court on Monday suspended the Shakahola Commission for seven days pending a detailed ruling to be issued next week.

The suspension was granted after Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition, led by opposition leader Raila Odinga, filed a petition challenging the legality of the commission’s appointment.

In the petition, Azimio argued that President William Ruto’s appointment of the eight-member commission was unconstitutional and amounted to a usurpation of powers vested in other state organs.

The coalition argued that the President had no authority to appoint a commission of inquiry to investigate the deaths, torture, and inhuman and degrading treatment of members of the Good News International Church.

Azimio further argued that the commission’s appointment undermined the authority of the Inspector General of Police, who is theconstitutionally mandated officer to investigate criminal matters.

The court’s decision to suspend the commission’s operations is a major setback for President Ruto, who had hoped to use the commission to investigate the activities of the Good News International Church and its leader, Paul Mackenzie.

The church has been accused of engaging in a number of illegal activities, including forced labor, child abuse, and financial fraud.

The court’s decision will allow the coalition to argue its case in full and will give the court time to consider the constitutionality of the commission’s appointment.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 29.

Here are some additional details about the case:

  • The Shakahola Commission was appointed by President Ruto on May 4.
  • The commission is led by Court of Appeal judge Jessie Lesiit.
  • The commission is tasked with investigating the deaths, torture, and inhuman and degrading treatment of members of the Good News International Church.
  • The church has been accused of engaging in a number of illegal activities, including forced labor, child abuse, and financial fraud.
  • The coalition filed its petition challenging the legality of the commission’s appointment on May 16.
  • The court’s decision to suspend the commission’s operations is a major setback for President Ruto.
  • The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 29.

Government to Expand Search For Shakahola Cult Survivors And Bodies To Tsavo East National Park

Government to Expand Search For Shakahola Cult Survivors And Bodies To Tsavo East National Park

The Kenyan government announced on Sunday that it will expand its search for survivors and bodies of the Shakahola cult to Tsavo East National Park. The search has so far focused on Shakahola Forest and the Chakama Ranch, but the government believes that some cult members may have fled to the park to avoid detection.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said that the search will be conducted using ground and drone teams. He added that the government is also pursuing cult members who are believed to be hiding in the park.

The Shakahola cult is a religious group that is led by Paul Mackenzie Nthege. The group has been accused of starving its members and forcing them to work long hours. In April, the government discovered mass graves in Shakahola Forest that contained the bodies of cult members.

So far, the government has exhumed 239 bodies from the graves. The bodies have been taken to Malindi Sub-County Hospital for autopsies. The autopsies are expected to be completed in the coming days.

Kindiki said that the government is committed to finding all of the cult members and bringing them to justice. He added that the government is also working to provide support to the families of the victims.

The search for the Shakahola cult survivors and bodies is a complex and challenging operation. However, the government is determined to find all of the cult members and bring them to justice.

We are traumatised exhuming these bodies – Shakahola team says

We are traumatised exhuming these bodies – Shakahola team says

It is 6am and the temperature in Shakahola township is approaching 27 degrees Celsius. Harry*, a local, is not bothered. For the last one month, he has been waking up at dawn and getting ready to head to Shakahola forest to help in the exhumation of bodies inside the forest.

In an exclusive interview with Nation Media Group, Harry reveals his first-hand experience.

“It is the first time for us locals to be part of such a traumatic exhumation exercise. We have never witnessed something like this,” says Harry.

Their day begins with a debrief from Homicide Director Martin Nyuguto, who is in charge of the exhumation operation.

Divided into three groups of 10 each, they are then dispatched to different sites where the graves have been previously marked. They have a daily target of exhuming at least 20 grave sites. He adds that they have been trained to carry out the job by forensic experts.

“Some parts are hard to dig, so we strategize. Other days, we hit the target early since you find one grave site with more than 10 bodies in it,” explains Harry.

He says they are paid Sh1,000 per day, which in his view is not commensurate with the work they are doing. They also want the government to fully employ them, saying that the team deserves decent-paying jobs.

“We ask that when any money comes out of the exercise, it should be given to our chairman. That way, it becomes easier for us to get hold of the funds donated,” says another digger.

The one month they have been at the crime scene has turned out to be a traumatic experience for them.

“At night, I find it hard to sleep. I see the bodies we have retrieved during the day in my dreams. We want counselling when the exercise is completed, but we are apprehensive that this might not happen,” says Harry.

He says Red Cross has offered them counselling as they conduct the exhumation, but they see it as unnecessary since the exercise is still ongoing.

So, how were they selected for the job? They say they had knowledge of where the grave sites might be located.

“We were friends with some of Mackenzie’s followers back then when they were still visiting the shopping centres, but when we got a tip that children were dying and being buried inside the forest, we mobilised ourselves and tried accessing the area. Unfortunately, our motorcycles were burnt down by the crooks in the cult,” says Tim*.

Yesterday, eight bodies were exhumed bringing the total deaths to 235. At the same time, four people— three females and one male adult—were rescued, with one of the females in critical condition. This brings the total number of those rescued to 89. There were no arrests.

Today, the Senate Ad hoc Committee on the Shakahola incident is expected to conduct a series of meetings in the area. It is trying to establish whether there were any security breaches in the area, which led to the deaths.
