The Wiper Democratic Movement party, led by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, has officially rebranded to the Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF). This change was announced by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, in a gazette notice.

The gazette notice issued a seven-day window for any objections to the name change, inviting the public to submit memoranda to the Registrar.

“In exercise of the power conferred by section 20 (1) (d) of the Political Parties Act, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) intends to change its party name to Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF),” the notice stated.

This marks the latest in a series of transformations for the party. Founded in 2006 as the Orange Democratic Movement–Kenya (ODM–Kenya) following the 2005 constitutional referendum, it later became the Wiper Democratic Movement – Kenya in 2011 to distinguish itself from Raila Odinga’s ODM. In 2021, the “Kenya” tag was dropped, simplifying the name to Wiper Democratic Movement.

The current rebranding appears to be strategically aligned with the upcoming 2027 General Election, particularly with an emphasis on youth voter registration. Kalonzo Musyoka has previously indicated that the name change is a tribute to the Gen Z youth who tragically lost their lives during the anti-Finance Bill protests in 2024.

Wiper’s move mirrors similar political maneuvers by other opposition figures as Kenya’s political landscape heats up. Martha Karua recently rebranded her National Rainbow Coalition-Kenya (NARC-K) party to the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), complete with new party colors (lilac, white, and purple), a revised symbol (a purple rose), and a new slogan, “Unite, Liberate,” replacing “One Kenya, One Nation, One People.”

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a new political outfit, the Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP), following his reported ousting from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The DCP’s identity features a neon green and white emblem with the engraving “Skiza Wakenya” and a logo depicting fingers holding an ear. Senior leaders within the DCP include former Bungoma Senator Cleophas Malala, former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, and former Lakipia Senator Cate Waruguru.
