Investments, Trade and Industry CS Moses Kuria has been condemned for his attack on Nation Media Group.<\/p>\n
Kuria, who is a vocal supporter of Deputy President William Ruto, used unprintable words to describe the media outlet in a video and text message that were widely circulated on social media on Sunday, June 18.<\/p>\n
He also threatened to sack any state official who would place adverts with the media firm.<\/p>\n
The Media Council of Kenya has condemned Kuria’s remarks, saying they amount to commercial censorship and incitement of the public.<\/p>\n
“The Media Council of Kenya strongly condemns the continued attacks and profiling of the media and journalists by CS Moses Kuria,” said the council’s CEO David Omwoyo in a statement.<\/p>\n
“These attacks pose a big threat to the independence and freedom of the press in Kenya.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The council has called on Kuria to apologize for his remarks and to respect the freedom of the press.<\/p>\n
The Kenya Union of Journalists has also condemned Kuria’s remarks, saying they are a threat to media freedom.<\/p>\n
“We condemn the continued attacks on the media by CS Moses Kuria,” said the union’s secretary-general Joseph Odindo.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
“These attacks are a threat to media freedom and the rule of law in Kenya.”<\/p>\n
Kuria has not yet responded to the condemnation of his remarks.<\/p>\n
The Media Council of Kenya and the Kenya Union of Journalists have called on the government to take action against Kuria for his attacks on the media.<\/p>\n
They have also called on Kenyans to stand up for media freedom and to defend the right of journalists to report without fear or favor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
