{"id":197311,"date":"2023-11-02T06:10:48","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T03:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.com\/ke\/?p=197311"},"modified":"2023-11-02T06:10:48","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T03:10:48","slug":"tourism-cs-accuses-kra-of-harassing-tourists-vows-to-fix-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.co.ke\/ke\/tourism-cs-accuses-kra-of-harassing-tourists-vows-to-fix-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Tourism CS Accuses KRA of Harassing Tourists, Vows to Fix It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-sourcepos=\"3:1-3:292\"><span class=\"animating\">Tourism and Wildlife CS Alfred Mutua has accused Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials of harassing tourists at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> Mutua claims that this harassment is one of the reasons why Kenya is dropping from the list of top tourist destinations in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:252\"><span class=\"animating\">In a video seen by The Star,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> Mutua questioned why KRA officials harass tourists when other African countries do not,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> even though they collect the same taxes.<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> He cited Rwanda,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> South Africa,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> and Dubai as examples of countries that do not harass tourists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"7:1-7:5\"><span class=\"animating\">Mutua insisted that it is time Kenya made her visitors feel welcome by stopping some practices,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> such as the harassment of tourists.<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> He noted that as CS for Tourism,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> that is one of the things he intends to fix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:190\"><span class=\"animating\">Mutua said that KRA staff are not to blame,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> but they have bad habits.<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> He promised that if the country wants to rake in revenue from tourism,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> the harassment of visitors must stop immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:264\"><span class=\"animating\">Earlier this week,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> the taxation of personal goods at points of entry into Kenya upset a section of the public.<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> However,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> when The Star sought clarification about alleged harassment and taxation of personal goods,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> KRA Deputy Commissioner,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> Marketing and Communication Grace Wandera referred to the KRA Customs Handbook on arrival and departure information,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> which details the requirements for travellers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:324\"><span class=\"animating\">But there are still concerns over exorbitant taxes,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> which have forced some individuals to abandon their items.<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> A clause that gives customs officers the powers to determine the value of goods and their taxable status is seen as a gap to impose taxes where they should not apply,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> amid cries of harassment by customs officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:12\"><strong class=\"animating\">Tl;dr<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:258\"><span class=\"animating\">Tourism CS Alfred Mutua has accused KRA officials of harassing tourists at JKIA,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> which is one of the reasons why Kenya is dropping from the list of top tourist destinations in Africa.<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> He has vowed to fix this problem and make Kenya more friendly to visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"19:1-19:341\"><span class=\"animating\">KRA Deputy Commissioner,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> Marketing and Communication Grace Wandera has referred to the KRA Customs Handbook on arrival and departure information,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> which details the requirements for travellers.<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> However,<\/span><span class=\"animating\"> there are still concerns over exorbitant taxes and the powers of customs officers to determine the value of goods and their taxable status.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tourism and Wildlife CS Alfred Mutua has accused Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials of harassing tourists at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
