Kiptum and his coach died in a collision along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road in Kenya.<\/p>\n
The accident occurred around 11pm on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
A third person in the vehicle was injured and taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n
Kenyan political leader Raila Odinga and others expressed condolences for the loss.<\/p>\n
Raila wrote on X that the country had lost a true hero and was mourning a remarkable individual and Kenyan athletics icon.<\/p>\n
\u201cDevastating news as we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, World Record holder and Kenyan athletics icon. Together with his coach, they tragically passed on in an accident tonight. My deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity. Our nation grieves the profound loss of a true hero,\u201d he wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Kiptum’s passing was also lamented by Athletics Kenya in a social media message.<\/p>\n
\u201cAthletics Kenya is deeply saddened to announce the passing on of the World Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his Rwandese coach Garvais Hakizimana.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe two died in a road accident at Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road.<\/p>\n
