To supplement her meager income, she and a colleague found creative ways to survive.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"1002\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"788\" data-end=\"1002\">\u201cYesterday, after the show, we were having a conversation about hotels, and I remembered when I used to work as a receptionist at a guest house in Saba Saba, Mombasa,\u201d she said. \u201cMy child was just four months old.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1215\">She described the guest house as a typical low-budget facility\u2014\u201cthe kind where you\u2019re handed slippers in different colours.\u201d Most guests, she said, came during the day for short stays and rarely spent the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1217\" data-end=\"1480\">This pattern presented an opportunity. Jovial and the housekeeper would clean up rooms after guests left and quietly re-rent them to new clients, without the management\u2019s knowledge. They would split the earnings and use the extra income to meet their basic needs.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1645\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1484\" data-end=\"1645\">\u201cAfter the guests left, I\u2019d clean the room with the housekeeper, change the bedsheets and towels, and we would resell it. Someone might ask why there were no CCTV cameras, but at that time, God didn\u2019t allow it\u2014because I had no other way to buy milk for my child.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2034\" data-end=\"2186\">The singer said those hard times shaped her into the resilient woman she is today, crediting the experience for building her strength and determination.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2420\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2420\">\u201cLife was hard back then. Now I look at my baby and I smile\u2014she\u2019s a survivor, just like me.
