As he tried to come to terms with her condition, he was hit with a medical bill running into <strong data-start=\"655\" data-end=\"680\">millions of shillings<\/strong>, with the hospital demanding that he pay half the amount upfront.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"1017\">\n<p data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"1017\">\u201cMy daughter was unwell, admitted to the ICU and in a coma. Barely a week in, as I was still trying to understand what was happening, I was slapped with a medical bill\u2014not thousands, but millions. The hospital told me I had to pay half immediately, or else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1269\">Okari noted that throughout this crisis, he was not given a clear explanation of her condition. This, he said, reflects a wider systemic issue in Kenya\u2019s health sector, where families are often left in the dark while still being pressed for payments.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1497\">\n<p data-start=\"1273\" data-end=\"1497\">\u201cYou\u2019re under pressure to grasp what\u2019s going on, but all you get is demands for money. In the end, you leave the hospital with your loved one\u2014without even knowing what\u2019s wrong. That\u2019s the reality for many Kenyans,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1540\">\u201cWhere\u2019s the Money?\u201d Before Treatment<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1542\" data-end=\"1815\">The investigative journalist also raised concerns about how financial capability is prioritized over medical urgency in Kenya\u2019s healthcare system. He criticized the practice of demanding proof of insurance or immediate payment before administering care\u2014even in emergencies.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1817\" data-end=\"1992\">\n<p data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"1992\">\u201cThe first question you get asked is, \u2018Where\u2019s the cover?\u2019 or \u2018Where\u2019s the money?\u2019\u2014and this is during an emergency. That\u2019s the unfortunate truth of our system,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"2033\">Ivanna\u2019s Battle with a Rare Illness<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2373\">Okari\u2019s daughter, Ivanna, was diagnosed in <strong data-start=\"2078\" data-end=\"2086\">2019<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"2092\" data-end=\"2139\">Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM)<\/strong>\u2014a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. The condition rapidly worsened, robbing her of the ability to walk, speak, and eat, and ultimately leaving her in a coma. She spent a month in the ICU on life support.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2375\" data-end=\"2712\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Okari\u2019s revelations serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform in Kenya\u2019s healthcare system, particularly around affordability, transparency, and emergency care protocols.
