The matter, now under Senate investigation, has sparked nationwide outrage and drawn intense scrutiny over alleged misconduct by security agencies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"731\">During a Senate session probing Ojwang\u2019s death, several lawmakers questioned whether <strong data-start=\"513\" data-end=\"526\">Safaricom<\/strong> may have played a role by sharing the deceased\u2019s personal data with the <strong data-start=\"599\" data-end=\"647\">Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)<\/strong>. Some proposed summoning the telecommunications provider for further clarification.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"891\">In a swift and unequivocal statement, Safaricom <strong data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"805\">CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa<\/strong> denied any involvement in the arrest or the circumstances surrounding Ojwang\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"893\" data-end=\"1094\">\n<p data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"1094\">\u201cAt no point was there any contact between Safaricom and any security agency in investigating or arresting the late Albert,\u201d the statement said. \u201cWe became aware of his arrest through media reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1096\" data-end=\"1311\">Safaricom also addressed remarks made by <strong data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1187\">Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi<\/strong>, who reportedly linked the company to the incident. Dr. Ndegwa described the allegations as <strong data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1311\">\u201cdisturbing and unfounded.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1313\" data-end=\"1523\">\n<p data-start=\"1315\" data-end=\"1523\">\u201cWe are concerned and disturbed by the remarks by Hon. Justin Muturi linking us to the unfortunate incident,\u201d said Dr. Ndegwa, reaffirming the company\u2019s commitment to <strong data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1522\">customer privacy and data protection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1714\">The telco urged Kenyans not to be drawn into politicizing the tragedy and instead called for focus on the need for <strong data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"1693\">a credible, transparent, and timely investigation<\/strong> into Ojwang\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"1881\">\n<p data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1881\">\u201cOur ask to all Kenyans is to ignore any attempts to incite them and remain firm in demanding accountability through transparent investigations,\u201d Safaricom stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"2191\">The death of Ojwang has ignited public anger over police conduct and raised questions about <strong data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"2016\">the potential misuse of personal data<\/strong>. While investigations into the incident are ongoing, the Senate\u2019s involvement has broadened the scope to include <strong data-start=\"2130\" data-end=\"2160\">possible third-party roles<\/strong> in law enforcement operations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2193\" data-end=\"2354\">Safaricom concluded its statement by reiterating its condolences to Ojwang\u2019s family and assuring the public of its <strong data-start=\"2308\" data-end=\"2353\">longstanding commitment to data integrity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2356\" data-end=\"2620\">\n<p data-start=\"2358\" data-end=\"2620\">\u201cWe once again send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Albert and wish to reassure all Kenyans that we have always been safe and secure in how we handle their data, and we will continue to do so now and in the future,\u201d said Dr. Ndegwa.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2832\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">As calls for justice grow louder, attention now turns to the <strong data-start=\"2683\" data-end=\"2715\">Senate and security agencies<\/strong> to uncover the truth and ensure accountability in what many are calling a grave case of alleged <strong data-start=\"2812\" data-end=\"2831\">custodial abuse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Safaricom has responded firmly to claims linking it to the controversial death of Albert Omondi Ojwang, a young man who died while in police custody in Homa Bay, following his arrest.
