In the wake of growing public discourse around security, rights, and public order, the National Police Service (NPS) has stepped forward to reaffirm its constitutional mandate.<\/p>\n

A fresh press briefing from the Office of the Inspector-General, released on June 24, 2025, places the spotlight on what matters most: public safety, lawful expression, and national unity.<\/em><\/p>\n

From the onset, the NPS reminds all Kenyans that it exists not as a political tool, but as a constitutionally independent entity entrusted with securing the nation.<\/p>\n

Article 243 of our Constitution clearly outlines its mandate: to ensure national security, uphold human dignity, and preserve public order – while maintaining professionalism, impartiality, and adherence to human rights.<\/p>\n

Focus on Accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n

At a time when questions about police conduct are frequently raised, the Service has assured the public that every complaint is taken seriously.<\/p>\n

A robust internal affairs system and oversight from agencies like IPOA and Parliament mean no stone is left unturned.<\/p>\n

Every act of police misconduct is dealt with \u201cfirmly, swiftly, and transparently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes – incidents may arise. But NPS isn\u2019t shying away.<\/p>\n

They acknowledge them, learn from them, and remain focused on building a people-first police force that inspires trust rather than fear.<\/p>\n

Uphold Peaceful Protest<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Constitution under Article 37 is clear: every Kenyan has the right to assemble, demonstrate, and petition – but peaceably and unarmed.<\/p>\n

This right isn\u2019t just protected; it\u2019s recognized as a democratic cornerstone.<\/p>\n

However, as emphasized in the briefing, this freedom comes with legal boundaries.<\/p>\n

The Public Order Act and Penal Code Sections 78 and 82 define what\u2019s lawful and what isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Riots, property damage, or attempts to storm protected areas are outside the law – and the Police Service reserves the right to act decisively, within legal bounds, to protect public safety.<\/p>\n

A Call to Collective Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond law enforcement, the Inspector-General issued a national appeal:<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s protect our homeland together. Provocative acts targeting officers or undermining lawful orders serve no one – and only strain the delicate balance between freedoms and security.<\/p>\n

In his own words, Inspector-General Douglas Kanja reminded Kenyans of one unshakable truth:<\/p>\n

\u201cKenya is our homeland – let us protect it. We only have this country.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Saluting the Men and Women in Uniform<\/strong><\/p>\n

Often unseen, yet always on the frontline, Kenya\u2019s police officers continue to serve with dedication.<\/p>\n

From rural patrols to urban crime-busting units, these officers are not just enforcers – they\u2019re patriots.<\/p>\n

The Service has reiterated its unwavering support for every officer executing their mandate honorably, lawfully, and professionally.<\/p>\n

The Mission Continues<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s dismantling criminal networks, protecting life and property, or facilitating peaceful assemblies, the NPS remains focused.<\/p>\n

The public is urged to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities via the toll-free numbers (999, 911, 112), 0800 722 203, or via the #FichuakwaDCI channel.<\/p>\n
