As a Ministry, our hearts go out to all those affected. We remain committed to ensuring they receive the care and support they need,\u201d<\/strong> read an official statement from CS Duale.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"919\" data-end=\"951\">Relief for Affected Families<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"1166\">As per the directive, <strong data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1011\">Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH)<\/strong> has been instructed to waive all hospital bills for protest-related injuries, with the expenses now charged to the hospital\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1138\" data-end=\"1165\">Disaster Emergency Fund<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1380\">This includes the medical bill of <strong data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1217\">KSh 815,805<\/strong> accrued by Boniface Kariuki, who was placed on life support after being shot in the head during the June 17 demonstrations. He was declared brain dead on June 30.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1620\">Kariuki\u2019s case had become a heartbreaking symbol of the cost of civil unrest, with his family previously lamenting the soaring hospital fees and lack of government support, even as their son\u2019s condition sparked widespread public sympathy.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1645\">Human Rights Crisis<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1647\" data-end=\"1925\">The government\u2019s action comes amid growing scrutiny over the handling of recent protests. Originally peaceful, the demonstrations on June 17 and the June 25 Gen Z-led anniversary protests turned violent, marred by police crackdowns, the use of tear gas, and alleged live rounds.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1927\" data-end=\"2233\">According to ongoing investigations by the <strong data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"2023\">Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR)<\/strong>, these confrontations resulted in multiple injuries and fatalities. Boniface\u2019s shooting, reportedly while conducting his usual business selling face masks, shocked the nation and intensified calls for justice.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2235\" data-end=\"2270\">Rare Move Toward Accountability<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2272\" data-end=\"2599\">In a rare but significant development, the police officers linked to Kariuki\u2019s shooting have since been arrested and arraigned.
