Tensions are running high at Nairobi City Mortuary<\/strong> as families of protesters killed during the June\u202f25 demonstrations say the state is blocking post\u2011mortem examinations\u2014raising suspicions of a cover\u2011up.<\/p>\n

According to relatives, a government pathologist has skipped multiple scheduled autopsies, citing \u201csecurity concerns,\u201d despite a directive from the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA)<\/strong> that all bodies be examined.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThey\u2019re playing games while our children lie cold in the morgue,\u201d said one distraught parent. \u201cWe just want the truth so we can bury them with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Mounting Death Toll, No Accountability<\/h3>\n

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR)<\/strong> puts the toll from the anti\u2011Finance Bill protests at 19 dead, 531 injured, 15 enforced disappearances, and 179 arrests<\/strong>, alongside several reports of sexual violence. Not a single police officer has been charged.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe longer the state delays these autopsies, the more it looks like they\u2019re hiding something,\u201d a local human\u2011rights activist told reporters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Families worry that without immediate examinations, critical forensic evidence will be lost\u2014harming any future prosecution of those responsible for the shootings.<\/p>\n

Murkomen Remarks Fan the Flames<\/h3>\n

Public anger intensified after a leaked recording appeared to show Interior CS Kipchumba\u202fMurkomen<\/strong> saying police would not cooperate with IPOA investigations into civilian shootings. Although he later claimed his words had been taken out of context, many Kenyans remain unconvinced.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you tell officers to shoot and then shield them from scrutiny?\u201d asked a civil\u2011society leader.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
