Media personality Oga Obinna has secured a major legal victory, winning a defamation lawsuit against Radio Africa Group and being awarded Ksh6.1 million in damages.<\/p>\n
Obinna announced the win on social media, revealing that he had filed the suit a year ago against the media house, radio presenter Massawe Japanni, and a socialite who appeared on Japanni’s Radio Jambo show.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit stemmed from a broadcast in which a socialite made serious, unsubstantiated allegations against Obinna. The comedian was clear that the defamatory remarks were aired without the host or producers seeking any evidence for the claims.<\/p>\n
“So we successfully sued Radio Jambo for defamation about a year ago, and today we have won,” Obinna stated. “The host and the producers never asked for evidence but decided to air the story for Views and Likes or whatever reason.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Obinna noted that he and Massawe Japanni had previously worked together at QFM and Radio Africa, arguing that it would have been simple for the station to verify the claims with him before airing the broadcast. He added that the incident resulted in severe damage to his brand and reputation, leading to him being “called all kinds of names online and offline,” yet the defendants never offered an apology.<\/p>\n
He also pointed out the absence of the socialite, claiming she was currently “in hiding” after failing to appear in court despite being summoned.<\/p>\n
Court Ruling and Injunction<\/h4>\n
Senior Principal Magistrate Edward Too delivered the ruling, which held Radio Africa Group responsible for the defamation. Crucially, the magistrate also issued an injunction that bars the defendants from ever publishing similar defamatory statements about the media personality in the future.<\/p>\n
