Chiki Kuruka has gone public with a scathing account of what she calls a \u201cdisgusting\u201d<\/em> experience at Rondo Retreat Centre<\/strong> in Kakamega County, accusing the popular getaway of discrimination and cold treatment during a family visit.<\/p>\n

The outspoken creative, who was accompanied by her husband Bien Aime Baraza<\/strong>, her mother and sister, took to Instagram in fury after the incident, saying the experience left her deeply hurt\u2014especially because it happened in her home region.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI have never had an experience as disgusting as Rondo Retreat,\u201d she wrote.
\u201cTo disrespect Bien and I in our home county with my mum and sister, when we spend our entire career raising awareness for Western Kenya, is so disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She didn\u2019t stop there. Kuruka went on to question the retreat\u2019s values, accusing it of favouring foreign guests over locals.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cTo call yourself a Christian on top of that is insane. If you only want white guests, please say that on your website.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWe Just Wanted a Walk\u201d<\/h3>\n

Speaking to Mpasho<\/strong>, Kuruka claimed the drama began the moment they arrived. According to her, the family was initially blocked from entering the property and later met with a frosty reception.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t even trying to stay there,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe were asking for a walk, not accommodation. We never once asked for rooms\u2014we wanted a nature trail.\u201d<\/p>\n

She further alleged that she was spoken down to and dismissed when she explained she was a Kenyan resident.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told him I\u2019m a resident, and he said, \u2018No, let me explain to you who a resident is,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve lived here for eleven years. I know exactly who a resident is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kuruka claims the situation escalated until Bien stepped in, after which the family chose to leave. She also alleged that after sharing their experience online, Rondo Retreat deleted their comments and disabled further engagement.<\/p>\n

Bien Walks Out in Protest<\/h3>\n

Bien Aime Baraza also didn\u2019t hold back. The Sauti Sol singer blasted the retreat on social media, calling out what he described as colonial-era thinking.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cRondo Retreat is a disgrace to Kakamega County,\u201d he wrote.
\u201cWe need to decolonize our spaces. Rolling out the red carpet for white folks while treating Kenyans like trash is tired. I walked out in protest because I won\u2019t spend my money where I\u2019m not appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Rondo Retreat Fires Back<\/h3>\n

In response, Rondo Retreat Centre<\/strong> denied the discrimination claims. Bookings manager Walter Okello<\/strong> told Mpasho that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding over reservations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had no prior booking and we were fully booked,\u201d Okello said, adding that security policy does not allow walk-ins when the resort is at capacity.<\/p>\n

He explained that by the time management intervened, tensions were already high.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe manager tried to apologize, but they were already upset. Things had blown out of proportion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Online Firestorm<\/h3>\n

The incident has ignited fierce debate online, with Kenyans split between backing Kuruka and Bien\u2019s claims of discrimination and siding with the resort\u2019s explanation of a booking mix-up.<\/p>\n
