{"id":232120,"date":"2026-02-06T00:24:59","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T21:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.co.ke\/ke\/?p=232120"},"modified":"2026-02-06T00:24:59","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T21:24:59","slug":"inside-the-legal-dispute-over-azimios-coalition-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.co.ke\/ke\/inside-the-legal-dispute-over-azimios-coalition-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside the Legal Dispute Over Azimio\u2019s Coalition Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a quiet but consequential battle unfolding inside Kenya\u2019s opposition politics &#8211; and it\u2019s not happening at rallies or press conferences.<\/p>\n<p>A formal complaint submitted to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has challenged recent attempts to alter the leadership of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>The letter argues that the changes were made outside the law and are therefore invalid.<\/p>\n<p>At the centre of the dispute is a meeting of the Azimio Coalition Council held on Monday, 2 February 2026, which reportedly sought to effect leadership changes, including the position of Secretary General.<\/p>\n<p>According to the letter, those decisions may have crossed a legal red line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Does the Law say?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The objection leans heavily on Article 6A(1) of the Azimio Coalition Deed of Agreement &#8211; the binding document that governs how the coalition is run.<\/p>\n<p>That article is clear on two things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Who sits in the Coalition Council,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Who has the authority to appoint or remove its members, including the Secretary General.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Deed provides that such powers are not unilateral.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they are a collective preserve of the Party Leaders of the coalition\u2019s constituent parties &#8211; namely:<\/p>\n<p>1. Jubilee Party<\/p>\n<p>2. Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)<\/p>\n<p>3. Wiper Democratic Movement<\/p>\n<p>4. Suspend and freeze any action arising from the contested meeting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>2.
