Speaking on the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Mic Cheque Podcast<\/span><\/span>, she shared her experience of navigating life between two cultures.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"m8r5j\" data-start=\"453\" data-end=\"486\">A community with deep roots<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"789\">Kenyans of Indian descent trace their history in East Africa back to the late 19th century, when many arrived during the construction of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Uganda Railway construction<\/span><\/span>. Over time, they established businesses, built families, and became an integral part of Kenya\u2019s social and economic fabric.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"791\" data-end=\"988\">Today, the community is estimated at around 50,000 people. In 2017, they were officially recognised as Kenya\u2019s 44th tribe \u2014 a landmark move aimed at affirming their place in the country\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1084\">Yet, as Shiksha pointed out, official recognition has not fully erased questions of belonging.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1164\">\u201cKenyan Indians should not be called Kenyan Indians\u2026 we are Kenyan,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1oihhe\" data-start=\"1166\" data-end=\"1197\">Living between two worlds<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1442\">During the podcast, Shiksha described the emotional tension of feeling like an outsider in both Kenya and India. In India, she said, people often assume she does not fully belong. Back home in Kenya, she faces similar doubts about her identity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1591\">Her experience reflects a broader reality for many young people raised between cultures, where identity is shaped by both heritage and environment.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"p6alym\" data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1640\">A wider conversation on race and identity<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1736\">Shiksha\u2019s remarks come amid growing discussions about race and identity among Kenyans globally.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"1950\">Comedian <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Elsa Majimbo<\/span><\/span> recently shared her own experience with racism in the United States, recalling an incident in Malibu where a driver questioned her identity after she ordered a ride.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"2073\">\u201cProof to me it&#8217;s you\u2026 you have to show me your phone,\u201d the driver reportedly told her while keeping the car door locked.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2075\" data-end=\"2238\">Despite the incident, she noted that living in diverse areas like Los Angeles, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills has largely shielded her from frequent encounters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2240\" data-end=\"2393\">Similarly, content creator <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Natalie Tewa<\/span><\/span> spoke about experiencing what she described as \u201csilent racism\u201d while studying in the UK.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2395\" data-end=\"2521\">\u201cThey are not outright, but they are silent,\u201d she said, recalling moments when people were surprised she spoke fluent English.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2523\" data-end=\"2671\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Together, these stories are fuelling an ongoing conversation about identity, inclusion, and what it truly means to belong \u2014 both at home and abroad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIn India, you\u2019re told you don\u2019t belong.
