Travel content creator Kieran Brown has described spending a night on Kenya’s Migingo Island as the worst hotel experience of his travels, saying the stay was unlike anything he had encountered despite visiting more than 157 countries.<\/p>\n
Brown, who documents his adventures around the world, shared the experience during a recent podcast interview while reflecting on some of the most challenging places he has visited.<\/p>\n
Migingo Island, a tiny rocky outcrop in Lake Victoria, is famous for its thriving fishing industry and its long-running territorial dispute between Kenya and Uganda.<\/p>\n
Despite covering less than half a hectare, the island is home to hundreds of fishermen and traders, making it one of the most densely populated settlements in the region.<\/p>\n
Recalling his trip, Brown said he visited the island last year to film content for his YouTube channel.<\/p>\n
He explained that his arrival attracted attention from locals and that he and his companion had to obtain military clearance before they were allowed to spend the night.<\/p>\n
\n“It is often referred to as the most crowded island on the planet. We got there, and it is literally just a rock in the middle of the lake. It’s probably about half the size of a football pitch, and it has over 500 people living there,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Inside the $1 hotel room<\/h3>\n
Brown said they eventually secured accommodation for just one US dollar per night, but the experience fell far short of his expectations.<\/p>\n
According to the travel creator, the room consisted of a small tin structure with a single bed and lacked basic amenities.<\/p>\n
\n“It was just a tin shack with a little single bed. I looked up at the ceiling, and there were around 100 mosquitoes with no net, no window and no air circulation,” he recalled.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
He added that the room had a strong odour and claimed he found used condoms underneath the bed.<\/p>\n
\n“I don’t know how I stayed the night there, but I managed to. It’s one of those stories I’ll have for the rest of my life and be able to tell my grandchildren,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Migingo’s thriving fishing economy<\/h3>\n
Although small in size, Migingo Island plays a significant role in the Lake Victoria fishing industry.<\/p>\n
The island sits close to rich Nile perch fishing grounds, making it an important commercial hub for fishermen from the region.<\/p>\n
Its limited land area means homes, shops and businesses are built extremely close together, contributing to its reputation as one of the world’s most densely populated islands.<\/p>\n

Brown’s account quickly sparked reactions online, with many viewers responding with humour.<\/p>\n
Some joked that a one-dollar room could not be expected to offer luxury, while others quipped that he may have stayed on the Ugandan side of the island. Another commenter jokingly suggested that Migingo should be recognised as an independent country because of its unique character.<\/p>\n
